Patients with fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) typically have widespread chronic pain and fatigue. For those with low vitamin D levels, vitamin D supplements can reduce pain and may be a cost-effective alternative or adjunct to other treatment, say researchers in the current issue of PAIN®.
I know first hand that Vit D has helped me, thanks for this article.
Thanks Ann,
I always appreciate links to research on ways to help us. I am not sure if you noticed that on Alternative (under health and medicine) there is article on chinese herbs helping with neuropathic and inflammatory pain. Plus under Pain is number of interesting articles. This seems to be a site that picks up from origins of many and reproduces them here in one place...saves us time etc. BUT, if you are going to bring it to your doctor's i would go to the origin site and double check it. On another site similar to like this one, they had left out some important points..so to be safe bring original article.
Also, maybe i am alone on this but i was at the pharmacy and a woman asked pharmacist about Vit D, that she was told to take it. The pharmacist asked if she was to take supplement or did her doctor supply her with prescription? This confused the woman, who said isn't there just one Vit D? nope there are 2 and one comes in prescription. Not realizing that Vit D could be supplied by an RX i went home and googled it.
Here is link by nih(natl health institute) and read not just quick but professional etc.

On this same topic of Vit D, a friend of mine who has severe enough osteoporosis that she must take prescription to help strengthen her bones despite walking daily and healthy diet all her life plus never been ill except for low bone density. She also started having pain while walking, well her local health food person suggested she try cod liver oil in orange juice with Vit D added as well. It worked! So she told me knowing i also have pain and swelling both during and after walking.
Just a tablespoon of cod liver in 1/2 cup to cup of the OJ. You can buy cod liver that has citrus flavor to it, like lemon juice added which really helps to curb the fishy taste. So i tried this for about 1.5 years. It kind of helped with the pain..i am not positive as i have better days but it really does help with swelling! Plus, was a easy way to get Vit D and calcium plus the good fishy supplement to help reduce inflammation. The other catch was we both discovered was one brand was much better than other..makes sense as supplements are not regulated. We all seen stories how some supplement that cost arm and leg does not even have the one item they are pushing in it!
Some supplements opt to be tested by FDA and they carry a seal so consumers know you are getting what is said to be in it.
If anyone wants the specific brand of cod liver oil, i think she can still tell me. She lives across the US from me.
well thanks again Ann! I always appreciate any research article that helps with health problems of fibro.
If you belong to pain group, you should post this there as well if you have not already! : )
I went to an "Understanding Lupus" workshop held by Lupus Foundation of America. The rheumatologist giving the lecture mentioned that the latest studies have been showing that as Vitamin D levels go up, symptoms improve. Since I have started taking more Vitamin D I have been experiencing less overall symptoms, as well as less pain.
I would advise talking to your doctor and staying within safe levels of daily Vitamin D intake.
Loved the info. Thanks!
