Hi everyone! I hope you all are off to a great start for your week.
I am set to begin my first dose of methotrexate tomorrow morning but I have been sick all week. First with a stomach bug and then Friday, I started getting a cold. Ugh. It is the first time in a year that I have had a “really” virus and I get two in one week. The infusions I was on until April really helped keep me well.
My question is; do I start this medication while I am sick or should I wait another week? Or is there even a reason to be concerned?
You should definitely call your doctor's office and let them know that you have an infection. They will be able to determine if you need to wait or if the MTX will help with the inflammation associated with the virus.
Communication is key.
Honey please let your doctor know you may need to be better and not so run down
Hi. When I was on both benlysta and methotrexate, my rheumatologist told me to call them right away if I was sick. So, I agree with everyone, please call and let them know how you’re feeling before you take anything, okay?
I would wait!! I just started it as well. I decided to take the injections (started on 1x per week. .4cc), now on 1x per week 3cc. I did this because I can not tolerate the fillers in "swallow" form pills. I have some friends on the same drug for the same reason. Also then you are not taking a daily does only a shot once a week (that is easy to do at home). Nice thing about this drug you can start and stop, When EVER we are sick we skip!!!!
I suggest you wait. If you get a reaction to the drug, it will be hard to determine what is a side effect of drug or what is side effect of virus. Also, the virus can turn into a bacterial infection while on this drug.
Get yourself as strong as you can, start the drug and track every symptom. Best of luck to you, I know this drug is a last resort for some of us!!

I would wait another week…methotrexate is a tough drug on the body, especially the immune system. When sick you need all your defenses working for you. I’ve taken it at various doses for years and I can tell you this, you take your dose when sick- its even longer before you feel better! I feel for you friend!
I will wait before I start the new medicine

Thanks everyone for your input. I am feeling much better this week and plan to start the medication tomorrow. Can anyone give me an idea of what to expect? I am a little nervous…
Some people have GI upset with MTX. Folic acid can really help with the side effects. If you haven't been given a prescription for it yet, you could call your Rheum and ask for one. Its a pretty common request, so you shouldn't have any problems getting it. I always felt a little tired after taking it, so I took it on Saturday evening, and had all day Sunday to recover.
