Yep have had my knee and my shoulder replaced My ortho says the hip surgeries are more successful than the knees-if that helps anyway. But weight loss is gonna be key whether you do or do not have surgery.
Ok thanks. It will be a while then, since weight loss takes time. Having to go off my meds. is scary. I had a stroke the last time I had to skip them due to the flu.
Sure hope the hip holds out. Thank you for the reply.
Rosie, I will be following your post with great interest.
I need one knee done (was told years ago) but have fought it. Already have spinal fusion with donor bone and hardware, blessed it was not rejected as I am allergic to everything under the sun.
I hope everything comes out well for you, I know how hard it is to be heavy with joint issues.
I am particularly worried about my lupus treatments. My aunt had a failed knee replacement that got infected with MRSA. She literally spent YEARS in a nursing home b4 being able to have the knee bones fused rather than have amputation.
I just spent 6 months getting rid of a MRSA infection of my legs thru a wound care center without having to stop my meds. What a battle!
My Rheumy allowed me to get a powerchair last year. I think.I will use it a LOT to spare the hip for as long as I can. The idea of surgery on it scares me silly!
Best of luck with your knee, OSP. I hope you can hold out, too. Must be a comfort to know that you came thru major bone surgery well!

I came through with flying colors with my first knee replacement 5 years ago. On Sept. 16 I have the other knee getting a partial knee replacement. The only thing with the first knee was I should have done it sooner as I suffered too long. This one I have been trying to lose weight first but I haven't been successful. I'm told my metabolism is almost negligible and no one has answers to what I can do about it. I have tried everything and I lose a little bit aftera long time and then just stop. ( I have no idea how I got this line in my typing. New laptop). I am hoping that this one goes as well. This one is outpatient which makes me nervous too. I can barely walk now and the knee "crunches" all the time . Good luck when you decide to do it!
Thanks, Reet. It is good to know your knee replacement went swimmingly. Best of luck on the second one.
Yeah, my metabolism is shot, too. I am medicated for hypothyroid, like it does any good. Gonna baby this hip as long as I can.

Rosie, I know there are many on the LWL site who have had hip replacements. Until you see an orthopedic surgeon you won't know for sure. I thought I would need a replacement but it turned out that I have bursitis and all that could be done was a corto-steriod shot in the hip bursa when it gets really painful. For me, I thought that was much better than a replacement. But a close girlfriend who is middle aged (or "early senior" as I have hear my age group called {60}), had both hips replaced due to a congenital defect and she did GREAT. There is a fairly new surgery technique where the surgeon goes in through the front of the body. I'm sure you will hear from many people! And maybe you won't even need the surgery. Gosh, you have been through so much, you are very brave. What causes those knee crunchy noises? Does anyone know? All the best to you, LupanCatwoman
Yes, left knee was totally replaced in 2006 and I'm waiting to have the right one done. I was on all of my SLE meds, except they told me to stop a few before the surgery, and I did just fine. My weight went up 80 pounds when they put me on steroids and my ortho surgeon didn't like my weight, but he knew that my knee needed replacing and he did it.
Wow! It gives me courage to know that so many Lupies have had successful, and even repetitive, joint replacements. When they wheel me in to replace the left hip when I break it, each one of you will be coming with me.
Whatever we do, others have BTDT as Lupies, huh? Kewlness!
