Hello everyone and I hope you all are doing well. I have been a member for quite some time although have only posted a couple of times. I do believe that I have seen on here some others who suffer as I do with chronic hives when the Lupus is flaring. I have been having a unusually horrible outbreak and was just curious if anyone has found any relief for the itching burning misery of these monsters? Any suggestions would be so welcome and appreciated...I feel like I have tried everything but you never know! Thank you all for being here and being the strong, persevering warriors that we all must be to live with this disease. God Bless.
I too suffer from hives in a flare. Unfortunately haven’t found great relief. I usually just wash face or shower then take a Benadryl;)
I have had uticaria for 20 years or more. The cure (for me, anyway) is to take Zyrtec every.single.day. It is great for hives. If you take it, it will take several days to really get working because it has to build up in your system, but once it does, you'll be amazed at the results.
Funny story. I had been taking it for probably 5+ years when I went to an allergy specialist. They wanted me to be without my Z for 5 days in order to get blood tests. I told them I couldn't. MAYBE I could try 3 but it would be bad. SO, I did go without it for 3 days. By the time I got to the dr. my body was a complete mass of welts...head to toe. The doctor came in to talk to me and after about a minute he asked me what I took to control the hives. Then he said hang on...went out and came back with a Z. He said he couldn't stand to watch me itch any more! lol
About an hour after I took it I was driving home and being driven nuts by the itching. All of a sudden it was like someone threw a bucket of warm water over me....I literally flushed and the itching stopped. The Z had kicked in. WHAT A RELIEF!
I take Claritan and Benadryl when my hives flare and I’m sure it helps eventually but the only thing that helps the itch is Benadryl gel which I keep close by and apply often.
Lavender essential oil is good for itching and skin relief if you haven’t tried that
My doc got me on zyrtec zinc and pepcid. I find cool packs help when all else fails
Hi there,
I take a Reactine (extra strength) everyday. It keeps the hives at bay and to cool it down if I do have a flare, I shower and put Noxzema medicated cream on it.
I’ve had some success with Eucerin Calming Creme and Sarna anti-itch lotion.
benadryl works great to stop my itching, but then i sleep for two days!!!
Wow!! You guys are the best! I will try some of these things that I have not already tried. Thank you for the story Mrs Doolittle...you sound like a trooper that's for sure! Thank you all for sharing with me.
Hugs. Kayla

I don’t know how bad your hives are but I do get them too and they suck. I usually have them on my legs and arms. Since my doctor took me off of cortisol already, she asked me to take it again, half a tablet of it in the morning then another half during lunch time. She said it’s just physiological dose so that won’t hurt me. Please note I took cortisol not Prednisone. Prednisone gave me bad migraines. For the itch I apply hydorocortisone cream or lotion.
There is benadryl lotion that might help. Mine burned so much I got in the tub without water and smeared plain yogurt (sour cream would work too) all over my hives. It eased the burning temporarily but eased my mind even more. AAAHHHH. I found an old fashioned medicine that works tons better than Benadryl pills for my hives. It's over the counter. In the US its called Chlor-Trimeton, in Canada it's Chlor-Tripolon. If someone reading this lives in another country and wants to try this antihistamine, the chemical name is chlor-pheniramine maleate. I'm so sorry for your misery Kaykay! OH! I remember that a cool bath with baking soda in it helped, and that a few years ago a bath with some oatmeal also helped. I've been looking for remedies since I was 12 for hives. You should Google this medicine to see if it will have a bad interaction with any of the meds you take. Best wishes!
I got them really bad all over my body and face twice! Zyrtec everyday helped me too but my doc had me take them a certain way & wean off of them after about a week. Did the trick! Thank goodness! And luckily when it happened to me, it happened on the weekends when I didn’t have to be at work
Just wanted to say that for years I was told by my dermatologist that I had hives with a flare. They even said it was sun poisoning on Occasion. However I finally ask for a biopsy and come to find out it was cutaneous tumid Lupus. So my suggestion to all of you that think you may have hives should have the rash biopsied with an Immunofluorescent study done!

Hi Deenie. I'm curious. Now that you know what that rash is, what do you do with them? I mean, how do you prevent it from coming out or is there anything you take to make the hives "sleep" forever I hope.
Well I only get a rash that itches on my arms. Actuly, it is a burning, simmering and itchy problem. The ONLT thing that works is putting ice packs on my arms. It gets the area cold enough I can’t feel it at all. It is kind of a pain but when it is literally the only thing that gives some relief - you just do it. Hope you find some relief!
