Headache(s)

I was wondering what everyone does for there headaches. I have had the same headache for a month now. My home doctor tried everything to try and get it under control and it would only lessen the pain. I have tried ice packs, physical therapy, essential oils and nothing has taken it away. I am currently taking a pain pill which I take if I want to go anywhere or else I cant function at all. I don't see my other doctors at mayo for another 3 wks... any suggestions on how you deal with the headaches?

I have the lupus migraines where the whole left side of my face and head hurts......I take a combo of tylenol and benadryl and even rub aspercreme into my temple and face.......that really helps me .

Headaches are a rough part of the lupus, as we all know unfortunately ..........hang in there! PRAYING for you....................

I take Duradrin, also called Midrin. It works for me usually the first dose. Sometimes it takes two doses. It is a prescription.

I have them too. Sometimes alternating heat and ice helps. Hang in there

Thank you all!!! :) I really appreciate all the input! I am looking forward to seeing my docs and seeing if they can get this under control. I went to the school today and even pushing my self in my wheel chair made my head hurt worse.

The real trick to migraines is catching them before they get too far gone and out of control. Be careful, as others are saying, of what combo and how much you take. I personally find that 2 Extra Strength Excedrine Migraine sometimes works. If that doesn't, I take Bultalbital (with Codeine and Caffeine).....prescription drug. If that doesn't I take Imitrex or Treximet (also prescription) at the onset of a migraine. If you have frequent and/or long-standing migraines, your doctor could put you on a beta blocker to prevent them in the first place and then have you take something like Imitrex or Treximet to actually treat a migraine on the onset. I have had them for over 20 years and was just in the ER last week because I had one for 7 days straight. I have had them for up to a month as well. ER puts a bandaid on it (a cocktail of Saline/Bendadryl/Dropertidol). It knocks the headache out (as well as your mind and body), but my headache returned the next day after being treated. Lots of stuff I am throwing at you, but hopefully good food for thought. I REALLY feel for you!

Maxalt (prescription) as soon as the headache starts, dark room, cool air, sips of water and sleep. I've suffered with migraines for 25 years. Nothing works, long term.

Now I see another reply that mentions caffeine. I had read (in the newspaper) that a combo of aspirin & caffeine helped. It doesn't! It caused me to have more frequent headaches.

I really appreciate all the input! I am now trying acupuncture, i wont know if it is helping for several wks. All I can say is all try anything to get it down or manageable.

To Julia's point - if you use caffeine too often for your headaches, you can become dependent on it and develop more frequent ones (these are sometimes referred to as boomerang headaches). It is so hard to find a promising and balanced remedy. And not all migraines are created equal....ugh!

I have had headaches for 20 years now. Ice packs, dark quiet room, expresso coffee (1 cup), advil. If this doesn't help within 2 hrs, then I know nothing will. I go on to the heavy meds (Amerge). Can't take this too often as I only get 8 per month. Luckily I don't usually need more than that. Good luck and hang in there.

Migraines appear to be a part of the lupus process for many that have CNS involvement. I take Fiorecet because Imitrex and the other new migraine meds do elevate my blood pressure to stroke range. There is a patch that you stick on the forehead or neck, completely non medicine, just feels like an ice pack and surprisingly they do help. My husband bought some for me and with the black-out shades he installed in our bedroom I am usually able to control them much better.

Hope some of these suggestions help, but always check with your physician before taking any medicine or herb.

Hugs,

DeAnne
