I saw some recent discussions on Biotene and Biotene like products. I recently started a medicine called Evoxac which is for Sjogren's. I am not at all sure that he gave it to me for Sjogren's because I have no official diagnosis of it or if he gave it to me because it might be very helpful (I take Restasis for dry eyes and use so many creams, lotions and oils to not be sooooo dry) but it has been very helpful. I no longer wake up as many times duing the night from my throat sticking together and I have more options of pain medications since dry mouth and throat had to be a consideration in what to try next.
O.K. stupid question from me now (please indulge). I come & go with mouth sores & in particular a large yellow ulcer on the roof of my mouth ( just like when you burn your mouth with too hot soup). I feel as though my tongue is 'too large' for my mouth & it seems to 'stick' to the large ulcer on the roof of my mouth. Dry mouth? Worth trying the specific products mentioned for dry mouth do anyone think? I use sensitive teeth toothpaste & gargle with warm salty water.
Thank you for your time Kaz xo

I am also very dry, all the time! I have to put drops in my eyes in the morning before I can even open them they’re so dry! My mouth and my nose are so dry I can’t stand it. My skin is dry, everything is dry! I can’t even cry anymore. Sex, What’s that again?.. My pain and depression are at an all-time high right now! I’m pushing on but i really don’t know how much longer I can push… Lee xoxo
PS: I just needed to rant a little…
I too had to dry sticky mouth which was caused by one of my meds. dentist recommended Biotene, I use the toothpaste and the rise worked very well for me. Nights were worst so I would rise and brush morning and night.
Mouth and nose sores are one of the symptoms of Lupus though it often seems like everything is related to everything else. Years ago, my eyes were so dry that the opthamologist said that I literally had scales like a lizard on my eyes. They tried putting in tear duct blockers so the tears would not dry out but it didn't work. At the time, the hairdresser was telling me my hair was very dry and the skin person was telling me that my skin was like paper. Turned out that ONE of the causes was a very old hypertension medicine that I took so I cut way back on that and replaced it with other meds. Pain meds also cause dryness and I was getting to the point where I had to fight both sleepiness and dryness - so dry that my throat was glued together nad water did not even work. That's when the doc gave me this new thing called Evoxac. I was tested for Sjogrens years ago when the dryness was first an issue so I don't know if it progressed or not. My dad uses the BioTene products and finds them very helpful. Apparently an uncle by mmiage would suck on cherry pits and that helped his dry mouth abit. When the dry mouth wakes me up, I go for any food item that helps saliva build up.
Definitely worth trying some of the moisturizing pastes and rinses. Most large pharmacies have a pharmacy brand that seem to work just as well as the name brands. That said I also us a very small but effective humidifier...it sits on a towel on my nightstand and I turn the nozzle toward me. I also try not to sleep under a fan (living in Vegas makes that difficult). I will sometimes take a lozenge before bed as the natural ones seems to coat my mouth. In addition to brushing I also use a tongue scraper...this seems to help also.
Just some suggestions and hope they work.

Hi Lee,
Have you been diagnosed with sjogren's as 80% of your symptoms fire in that direction and especially regarding not crying, i also have sjogren's badly and can't cry so the next move maybe plugging my eyes. Sjogren's causes dry skin besides your other symptoms.
I do recommend joining our sjogren's site, there's excellent discussion about the condition's it causes and i hope other members see the value of joining the site besides as this follows with a good many autoimmune diseases.

I also have dry mouth, eyes & skin. I use Biotene & L Lysine for mouth ulcers which takes them away fairly quickly. Restasis was fairly expensive & burns. I use OTC eye drops for dry eyes.
Well if you are all sjogren's related like i said it does dry your skin up...that's down to dehydration with the condition.
I use Biotene mouthwash for my dry mouth and it puts a false film in your mouth like you have salivia there...i'm on 2 lots of eye drops besides Gel which have to be added every hour alternatively but my rheumo says they need plugging.
Lynn it's so weird you posting this discussion as it's on the sjogren's site i've stated :) xxx
Welcome Rob
Did you start any new meds in say the last 90 days? It may be a reaction to that or another symptom of sjogrens. Ask your rhummy about both and good luck and agin Welcome

Thanks Julie... Yes plaquenil just over 90 days.... Also have developed a rash on my chest..
I was dx with lupus not sjogrens but know they come in droves once one appears.
Yuck
Rob
Hello Rob,
Your comment on them coming in droves quite true my friend. lol
Plaquenil can cause a rash it's one of the side affects but if you have skin issues with your lupus then that can be another cause...it might be worth seeing a dermo about it, as they don't mess about.

I should go check out the sjogren's list since I belong to that also. I have no idea if I have Sjogren's but I use Restasis and lots of products for hair and skin moisture and also Exovac which is where I started this discussion. It opened to the door to many more pain medicines when mouth dryness was not so severe.
Hi Lynn,
I know you've not been diagnosed as yet but with all these products your having to use it's worth looking and checking on the discussions on the sjogren's site...to see if your symptoms are properly what the members do suffer with the disease.

I have Sjogren's and don't take any prescription meds for it. I use Genteal Tears on my eyes and have Refresh Lacrilube for at night if I need it. I use a nasal moisturizing gel at night and other times too, Secaris. I use Biotène gel at night and that helps. I find chewing gum with Xylitol in it helps during the day or sucking on a Xylitol mint I got from the dentist. By the way, I am in Canada so the product names may be different.
My daughter who is a Certified Optometry Assistant suggested I take 1000 mg of Omega three daily. It is really important for eye health, especially for people with dry eyes. She learned at an in-service that that is how much it takes to do any good. I've been taking that dosage for about two month and have really noticed a difference in my tear production. My skin also does not feel nearly so dry and scaly, especially after I shower.
When I had cataract surgery a few years ago I had my lower tear ducts plugged and that has made a big difference for me in terms of tear retention.
I already have too-long list of meds to add more. Restasis works for me--insurance covers it. Dry mouth I resolve it by drinking homemade clove, mint and cardamon tea when it gets too dry. Chewing gum helps me too.
I get my gel and drops for my eyes off the doctor and now the biotene mouthwash as just been added onto my prescription but my rheumo said on my last visit my eyes need plugging.
The high maintenance fr this disease is unbelieveable.

Robc,
I, too, have those symptoms. Especially the nighttime. I make certain that just before bed I rinse with my mouthwash for dry mouth. It is the CVS brand comprable Biotene. It really does help. Many of our medications dry out our mouth. This has caused me to feel as is I can't swallow and that I am choking. As for it being a lupus symptom, I think there are enough of us that have that same difficulty that it should be classified if it not already. In other words, this is a common complaint, which is why so many of us know what Biotene is.
I would try the rinse, and if possible you may want to not take one optional medication before bed. I do this with my muscle relaxant as I know that it dries my mouth out during the day, so it is likely to dry out more during sleep. Sleep close to a humidifier if possible.
Best of luck,
DeAnne
