Doctors visit? Neuro problems

I keep getting in this state where I’m not very with it like I’m half asleep but I can’t really move much and I know it’s not a dream because I am aware but I hallucinate… I just had one where I couldn’t move or scream and my washing basket lid was moving like a mouth and a voice I actually definately heard came out like a groan… I’ve never been so scared in my life and it took me a while to get over the not being able to move and I could only move slowly out of it at first like I was really groggy if that makes sense?? I also sweat buckets when this happens Sorry if I don’t make sense… I also see whisps of smoke on a weekly basis… Should I tell my doctor?? Is this a neuro sign of lupus?? Any kind of help appreciated

I’m definately awake when this happens

I also get headaches the day it happens

definitely tell doc. It could be lupus or some type of a seizure even. Don’t keep this info from docs. Love, Sheri

I didn’t even know seizures could do that I thought with a seizure you weren’t aware of anything

I get very odd dreams. I know some medicines can actually cause the problems you are listing. Giodon I think it’s spelled, and Percicets both give me huge issues with hallucinating and hearing things. I would definitely consult my doctor as soon as possible to see if it us any medication or if it is Neurologic.

I do want to mention that sometimes, I’ll be half asleep and half awake, I feel that I see and hear things around me. It is very scary and horrifying. I fight to wake up and have had my children waking me in shock to what I was doing in my sleep. As far as I know about what it is, it’s called sleep parallelization. Good luck and keep us posted dear.

Thanks juju. Yeah I seem to suffer both types. Had this issue for years. I know it isn’t real but it sure scares the heck out of me. I even have it while in the hospital. I have tried many things, even sleeping with an open bible under my pillow. So many people have told me things to do or told me it was a witch. Just nonsense mainly. I know our brains can conjure up all kinds of things while awake and asleep. My dreams have always been vivid.

I would get a nuero consult asap. As has been mentioned in other posts, there is a definitive link between lupus and psychosis. It can be helped, however, but you need to let your doctor know. Not everyone has the hallucinations (I did during a very bad flare around Thanksgiving) but it can be very frightening and very dangerous. If you are driving, bathing doing something else physical, you are not in 100% control over your actions and environment.

Please let us know how you are doing.

I’d let your doc know about these episodes, especially the part about you sweating buckets. It could be seizures while you sleep. My husband told me about 2 incidents where I was having something like a seizure while I was sleeping. He said my whole body was shaking and I was sweating.

Also, lupus can cause psychosis. We need to be aware of this, too.

Regarding sleep paralysis, I suffer from that occasionally. It’s been happening since my teenage years, about 30 years now. It runs in my family. My dad, sisters, brother, cousin, and son have it. It’s terrifying because you are aware of your body being paralyzed which is a normal occurrence while you sleep. It’s our bodies way of protecting us so we don’t hurt ourselves by acting out our dreams while we sleep. Most people don’t become aware of this paralysis which is how it’s supposed to be. For those of us that do wake up while still paralyzed, it’s terrifying because it’s such an odd feeling. Your body is very heavy, reminds me of what it must be like to be stuck in quicksand. We weren’t meant to experience this feeling. It’s almost like being in another realm. You are conscious of your surroundings and yet your subconscious is still stuck in dreamland and seeing strange things. It’s a weird and scary place to be. The sights and sounds experienced are magnified and seem very real to us because we are semi-conscious. I’ve “seen” black shadows standing nearby watching me, heard normal voices and scary voices during this paralysis that aren’t really there. Usually I fight to move, talk and open my eyes, but it only seems to make the paralysis worse. The only thing I can do is try to call out to someone which comes out as moans. My husband and sons help me out of the paralysis by shaking me. It’s amazing and terrifying being conscious and unconscious at the same time. I’m aware of where everybody is in the house during my paralysis and try to alert them to help me out by trying to speak which comes out as scary sounds and moans instead.

It happens a lot less frequent now and I’m glad! There are great articles online about it with great advice from those that suffer from sleep paralysis. Main piece of advice I can give is don’t sleep on your back. It seems to bring it on for some reason. Also, if you live with others tell them to wake you up when it happens. They can tell by the struggling sounds we make.

it seems to have been the sleep paralysis... id heard of it before but it never even occurred to me and i was probably sweating because i was trying so hard to get out of it... thanks for all your advice its really helped stop me from panciking about it... im still going to talk to my doctor because of the headaches but i think ive figured out whats going on :) :)

ive got one more question... i keep getting this headache ive been on about but it comes with a pressure and sometimes my ears hurt with it... what is this?? its really scary when i get it because my head feels really wierd and foggy

I’ve never experienced sweating with the sleep paralysis. I did experience it with the 2 seizures that weren’t related to my sleep paralysis. My sleep paralysis and seizures didn’t happen together. They happened separately from each other. As for headaches I don’t get them from sleep paralysis, but I did notice after the 2 seizures in my sleep that I woke up with a headache. I’ve never had a seizure while awake. Don’t worry ahead of time because it may be for nothing. I did read that sleep paralysis and migraines can be related. This might be what’s happening with you. Here’s a tiny bit more info: Sleep paralysis occurs when the brain awakes from a REM state, but the bodily paralysis persists. This leaves the person fully aware, but unable to move. In addition, the state may be accompanied by hypnagogic hallucinations often associated with terrifying visions (e.g. an intruder in the room), to which one is unable to react due to paralysis. Sleep paralysis can represent, at least in some cases, a migraine aura symptom which may occur in the brainstem. It has been linked to migraines. Sounds like this may be the case with you, migraines. Best to go to the doctor and get a proper diagnosis, and let him know about the pressure in your head and ears. Have you had your blood pressure checked recently? Just a thought. Your doc can also order a “sleep study”. My husband has those done for sleep apnea. I’ve never had one done. Take care.

Julie, thanks for sharing your video and the others so we can see exactly what seizures look like. They were eye-opening.

Are seizures dangerous or damaging to the brain?? Or is it just weird brain activity??

I have had seizures, TIA's and a stroke. I am on a 24 hour dose of dilanten to control them but as it was explained to me, seizures have to do with the brain waves. Beta waves in my case, but there could be an interruption in the wave activity. The synapses.

TIA's and Strokes are caused by an interruption in the blood flow or blockage by a hematoma in the brain. The difference between the 2 as explained to me by my nuero is duration and damage.

So while seizures don't necessarily cause brain damage, they can be dangerous as in some cases you lose conscieness, cannot control your muscles, etc.

Take care and stay healthy,

DeAnne
