What's up with my hands?

Hi everyone, hope you're all doing as well as possible. I have another question for you all. Oh, by the way, the answers I received from my last question were AWESOME! Thanks so much...you all help me learn so much. So now my hands seem to be acting strange. I am having a lot more pain in my fingers. Last night I had sharp sharp pain located in the back of my left hand. I tried tylenol, ice pack and a topical cream for arthritis...nothing! That pain kept me from falling asleep for over an hour. Every once in a while, my hands feel really cold too. What is all this??

Also, I've experienced a lot of pain in my elbows. When I do, I don't notice any significant swelling, but I do notice what looks like bruises on my elbows. You would think I fell on my elbows, but I didn't. I'm uploading pictures. I think I'll show these pictures to my rhuemy as well. Anybody got any idea about this as well?

Hello Rosie,

Your welcome from us all that's what we're here for to support one another.

First of all i suggest you join the raynauds group on the main page as your symptoms of coldness to the finger and hands can be raynauds plus also from nerve damage i suggest you ask for a nerve test to be run.

Here's two links from the raynauds group for you to look at.

http://arthritis.about.com/cs/raynauds/a/Raynauds.htm

http://my.clevelandclinic.org/heart/disorders/vascular/raynauds.aspx

The pain in your elbow is from the joints and Lupus travelling through the body and it lodges in places and mimic's other symptoms, it did it with me before i was diagnosed properly and i was treated for tennis elbow...so it you have pain circulating and lodging then your symptoms are stronger.

Regarding your bruises many issues can cause those Anaemia, DVT etc ask to have you blood tested for any clots just to make 100% sure and this information on platelets may also help.

  • Blood and lymph system: About half of people with lupus have anemia (low red blood cell counts), and up to half can have thrombocytopenia (low platelet counts) and leukopenia (low white blood cell counts). Low platelet counts can lead to bleeding and bruising in the skin and, if severe, can cause internal bleeding. Some lupus patients are predisposed to developing blood clots in veins (leading to phlebitis) or arteries (leading to strokes or other problems). This is most likely to occur in patients who have certain autoantibodies in their blood called antiphospholipid antibodies. Patients with these clinical problems and these antibodies may need to take blood thinners (anticoagulants) for prolonged periods of time. Women with these antibodies can also suffer from a high frequency of spontaneous miscarriages (as described above)

Hi Rosie

I have alot of pain in my hands and wrists. Its worse on my left side, including my elbows. I usually wake up several times a night and massage my wrists, and flex it and it will snap, crackle - pop and relieves the pain so I can go back to sleep. My forearm feels like someone grabbed it and twisted it in the opposite direction.

Good idea to show these pics to your rhuemy, I've started a list of things to discuss with mine the next visit.

Keep posting : )

Trisha,

All of the elbow pain and bruising is mostly on my left side too. Which I thought is weird, since I'm right handed. I wonder if there's any significance to the left side? Thanks

Rosie,

My Rheumie thought it was odd, my arthritis is worst on the left side of my whole body, and I'm right handed as well.

All I can offer is to advise you to try heat rather than ice and see if this may help. I am arthritic and anything cold just brings on more pain! Same with Raynauds if you have it, cold is the enemy!

Hope you get some answers and some relief!

Hugs,

SK

Same with me Trisha,

Right handed, but my left knee, ankle and foot are damaged joints with bones spurs, though lately my right SI joint has been bothering me more. This may be an answer, at least to mine.

Heat works for me as well, sometimes I will just run my hands under warm water at work and let it run awhile to relieve the pain and it seems to help.
