I have been having a lot of lower back pain in the muscles above my sacroiliac joints. Also my rib cage hurts on both sides of my sternum. And the muscles in my stomach are tender. I have always had sacroiliac and hip pain but this is different. Feels more like the muscles or something under the muscles. Just tenderness mostly but it was enough to wake me up last night several times. I have no idea what this is from!
Thanks Ann! My doctor told me a few years back that Lupus kidney issues frequently doesn’t present with pain but can sometimes cause pain in surrounding tissues… So I’m a little concerned. I go for bloodwork next week… So fingers crossed this is just sore muscles. Just have a lot of stress right now so it seems like everything is flaring up!

so sorry.
I have costocondritis & it feels a lot like that. It scared me because it was mostly my right rib cage that hurt & I was worried it was my liver (I'm still learning!). Definently check with your doctor, just hoping to lessen the worry a little for you! Praying that's all it is.

It’s gotten worse! Now taking a deep breath is really painful in the kidney area. I managed to sleep for a couple hours but it’s now 2am here and I am awake. This is the weirdest thing yet. My stomach muscles still hurt as well. Heating pad isn’t helping my back and my spine is cracking every time I move!
Roni- Please go to the emergency room at the hospital.
This sounds serious and you are better to be safe than sorry.

Sorry if I alarmed you Meg… I’m not having a problem breathing! The back pain is moderate, mild burning sensation, above my hips but below my rib cage. When I breath deep… Such as if I yawn then it is a more intense sharp pain in the “kidney” area. I initially thought kidney infection but I don’t have any other symptoms of kidney infection. The arthritis has been flaring pretty badly… so maybe muscle inflammation? When I breath regularly the pain is an steady ache… If I yawn… It’s almost like a spasm and I stop halfway through the yawn and end up panting. Of. Ourselves with the lack of sleep… Yawning is harder to avoid! I have a doctor appointment Tuesday after the bloodwork. I’m going to try picking up some robaxacet and see if the mild muscle relaxer in that will help. Thanks for your concern and sorry for the confusion! =)

Roni, Meat to respond like a million 'sto tis, lol, sory took me so long. Liten, I hve th SAMETHING! ears ago, whe went ot GOD DOCS WHO ACTUALLY LISTENED TO ME & LOOKED INTO EVERYTHING, i was told that when kidneys r affected by Lupus (Lupus Nephrits) that the docs. know b4 u do, cause there are “no” symptoms for us to see, except protein in urine & other stuff found on cultures, etc., they always said I wouldn’t feel the pain…HENCE…I disagree a bit cuz, I know when my iflammation is in high gear. the pain is bad there & everywhere…I have had BAD infections of my kidneys, causing GROSS amounts of Hematuria (blood) when urinating…it was SOOO Painful, OMG! And it was not a UTI, much worse. the urologist bck then said inflamation around the sac of your kidney like a tomato in casing, that when swollen, that casing is inflammd & is VERY TENDER>>>>HMMMM…so, do I think u can feel that infl. there, YES, absolutley!!! The Nephritis, mbe not…so dn’t panic, but chk it out!!! I have also been told in the PAST, I have had Sacroilitis, and SEROSITIS< which is infl. of all linings of the body, YEA< lots of FUN! LOL.So make sure u get ur urine checked, to c what is really happening! I feel ur pain, just take it easy…it may be inflammmtion, an WE ALL KNOW HOW BAD THAT FEELS!! {HUGS}} Suze :0) Let me know how it goes for u…
million x’s, sorry for the typos, keys r driving me NUTS!!! LOL…
Thanks for the reply Suzie! I’m a little concerned about that myself for the same reason… Doctor had told me Lupus kidney issues could cause pain in surrounding tissues including muscles. Tuesday’s bloodwork also includes a urinalysis… So if there is something going on there they should see it then. As much as i’de like to get a diffinative dx after 22 years of dealing with this… I’de rather the fourth criteria not be kidney involvement!! Fingers crossed. I’m hoping it’s just muscle inflammation and some muscle relaxers will help. Urine looks normal… At least to the naked eye so I’m hoping! I have some stressful things going on in my life right now… I think it’s making this flair worse! Thanks again and I’ll keep you informed.

PS: i also have sacroilliitis… this pain is deffinately not the same.
The ribs could possibly be pleural pain as pleurisy is common in lupus. Anything in the human body can become inflamed, and lupus will cause that, different thing happen to different people with this disease process. Kidneys are an issue as well.
I agree w James, as I am a Veteran of Pleuritis which causes the ribs to hurst so bad when breathing deeply especially, heck, even moving the wrong way!!! It SUCKS< SO BAD!!! I know, Sacroilitis, is a bit diff. I just meant with ur hip pain?? But not the kidneys…Thank God, that they r doing all the necessary bloodwork urinalyisis, that’ll give them a bird’s eye view… glad th ur eye it looks OK, MAN, when I had that massive “infection”, I peed RED WINE< AND Nothing else…sorry for the TMI, but sometimes we need to say it!!! I am really wishing u the BEST Roni & praying for u! Cuz my friend, I know u are HURTING LIKE HELL!!! Please REST!!! {{HUGS}} Suzie

Thanks James! I think I might have a couple of different things going on. I had thought with pleurisy it would be lung pain? The pain in my ribs is a steady mild ache which seems to get worse as the day progresses (by 7 or 8 even the pressure from my bra becomes too much). If I press my breastbone or my ribs under my arms it really hurts, then throbs for a few minutes but eases back to the persistent mild ache. Deep breathing doesn’t seem to effect the ribs other then the ache gets a bit deeper but eases back off quickly.
I have sacroilliitis and spondylitis so inflammation in my back is pretty standard for me. The “kidney” area pain is a new one for me! It’s pretty intense when I breath deep… Almost like a spasm, which is why I’m thinking muscles.
Pleurisy is really painful with movement, isn’t it? I’ve never had it before. I’de be tempted to say possibly mild costochondritis and hopefully muscle pain! I’ve got a lot of joint pain lately in joints that usually don’t cause a problem… so I think I’m just in a nasty flare.

ouch whatever it is from–sounds very painful.
Good news! I slept all night! I took a robaxacet, Arthrotec and Zantac before bed and piled the pillows behind me and slept all night. I feel so much better after getting some sleep! I’m thinking it must be muscles since the rabaxacet is helping which is a huge relief too. Thank you all for your advise and concern!!
YAY RONI!! SO HAPPY YOU GOT GOOD REST, IT IS SO IMPORTANT, & HOPING U R RIGHT & IT IS MUSCLE…HOPING & PRAYING IT LASTS…KEEP SMILING MY FRIEND!! SUZIE :0)

It’s gotten better! The ache is still there but the sharp pain when breathing deep is gone! Yay! Deffinately has to be muscles!
