Hi - Been having pretty bad back pain for two weeks now. Pain is just under ribs toward the sides and is on both sides. Headaches and a little nausea too. I had my urine tested and it was negative. Could it be kidneys? Am scared as I haven't has kidney involvement and not sure what it would feel like or how it would present.
Try not to panic, in reality the pain could be many different not so serious things:) good new is your urine is clear !have you had any blood work lately though? I do have abdominal organ involvement and do have pain but only right side and my kidneys are good so far. I think as lupus patients we are conditioned to be very aware that maybe one day the disease will hit our kidneys so when we have any discomfort in the upper back its the first cause that comes to mind.. Be sure to tell you rheumatologist if it persists and good luck:)
I have an appointment with rheumy end of the month. my guess is they will do more blood work then. Am worried because I am crazy bloated too. hopefully it will go away soon.
I have kidney involvement, what is called severe Lupus nephritis. They can check your kidneys by bloodwork and 24 hr urine testing. When I’m in a flare that is involving my kidneys my urine foams heavily ( a sign of spilling/losing large amounts of protein) diet and stress can impact it as well. I try to go organic as much as financially possible to reduce amounts of ingested pesticides and other chemicals. But if you have SLE Lupus I’m sure your GP or Rheumy would have no problem testing to check for kidney involvement. Yes, I also get kidney pain occasionally regardless if I’m in a flare or not. Those are my main ones for my kidney involvement, but there are many others like severe exhaustion, anemia, vitamin deficiencies. But those can also bet overlap symptoms of Lupus in general.
If your hands, feet, ankles or knees are swollen, definitely get checked right away. Those were my symptoms 11 years ago and my doctor did blood work and realized it was lupus nephritis, class 4. Don't wait to get checked!!
Hi Heather I had kidney pain when I was 17 and it was pretty lower back pain right above the buttox keep an eye on that it’s very important you take care of your kidneys. Follow ip with your doctor and have him check mor thourouhly if it continues.
Sorry kidney infection with pretty bad lower back pain but from what I’ve been told from the doctors and everything all I have read on LUPUS is more likely the cause like all these ladies say especially with SLE so don’t panic just have it monitored good luck
I have pain like this usually just on my right side sometimes left and it goes into my back deep inside. My doctor said it was probably inflammation, I take Prednisone when it does this. I do not have good Doctors, I do wish I could get some help. I worry about kidney damage. I also have lots of inflammation in my stomach as well. that flares up time to time,
Hi Heather, I get lower right pain in my back/side a lot. My my urine tests don’t show a problem however. I have lots of adhesions in my intestines so my doctor thinks it is that that’s causing the pain. I sometimes have belly pain along with it. Some weeks it’s almost non stop. I don’t know if adhesions can be related to the lupus or not. My Rheumy still not sure of my diagnosis except to say it’s a connective tissue disorder.
Hiatal hernia, I have one on each side, months and months of complaining and a CT scan showed two hiatal hernias, could be caused by many things, coughing hard,a fall, they can’t say how I ended up with them. However I took a pretty bad fall in our back yard last year…there really isn’t much they can do for them, the pain comes and goes,my right side in my side/back has been killing me this week, sometimes both sides hurt at once, ask your doctor if it could be possible you have a hiatal hernia and good luck…I hope you feel better soon…celeste
