Extreme back pain... At a loss

I’m coming to you all for guidance and education. I was diagnosed with lupus in January 2014 and this year had been a learning experience for me. Though I have read lupus can be very painful, I have been very lucky to not to experience much pain with it until this last week. I also have a kidney disease that I was diagnosed with in 1999 that had caused quite a bit of pain in the past. Over this last week, I have been experiencing pain in my lower back. It had been more severe than anything I have ever experienced, with the pain level at a constant 8 even with medication. I am limited with what I can take both because of my kidney disease and the methotrexate, so I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this and if so, how was it treated. Let me add I did just have tests this week and kidney function was healthy. Any feedback you could give me would be extremely helpful.

Lupus can cause pain, and fibro causes muscle and connective tissue pain. It could be this or it could be you pulled a meluscle. Try heat. You can also try icing it. They both help muscle pain. Maybe you could ask your rheumatologist about an ansaid or muscle relaxant, a lot of people with fibromyalgia take a muscle relaxant at bed time to keep muscles from tightening while sleeping. It helps. A friend of mine had such bad fibro pain in her upper back and shoulders no one could touch her. They sell a lot of large ice or heat pads in pharmacies now. Heat relaxes muscles, and ice numbs the pain Ask your doctor about fibrro.

I swim, and had p.t. then shots in my spine.

Have you been checked for kidney stones? The pain usually starts mid back and as the stone moves it gradually gets lower. Kidney stone pain is second only to labor for women. It’s the number one pain for men. I’ve been through it several times and even oxycodone barely eases it. My kidneys seem to like producing them despite drinking a ton of water but then I also dump tons of protein as well. If you haven’t been checked for them I would ask the doc to do so. Good luck.

Thank you for your recommendations. Annemarie, one of my kidney disease diagnosis causes me to have kidney stones constantly so I understand your pain. I have been in touch with my physician and waiting to hear back.

For generalized pain, I find that tart cherry juice, or tart cherry caps help me. I also use turmeric, and ginger as natural anti-infammatories. Couldn't hurt to try it. Good luck, and feel better.

I went to a pain management doctor. I ended up getting a couple epiderals, which seemed to help and also a radio frequency neuropathy procedure

well, i think your kidney problems stem from lupus, you more than likely have had it quite a while before you were diagnosed, well i have severe lower back pain too. my doctor says the lupus cells are attacking the weak part of my back...i have disintegrated discs so that could be your problem......purrs..catspaw1955
