Has anyone else purchased a wig as a result of lupus related hair loss? Was it covered by insurance?
I am thinking about it I’m thinking about cutting my hair very short because I have to many patches of hair loss from the prednisone.
Hi, I don’t think the wigs are part of insurance coverage??? That would be a good question to call the insurance company and find out!! But I really doubt it. Unless maybe Breast cancer is involved…Beverly L.
Hello mbaer,
Like Beverly said it's best to phone your insurance company to see if you'll be insured regarding wigs....i have my head skinned as it's been pointless growing it through bald patches and hair dropping out....this info below may be helpful to you.
some health care plans may cover at least part of the cost of a wig if your doctor prescribes it as a "necessary cranial prosthesis"
Although the link below is for Cancer patients getting free wigs, if your doctor agree's to the above info i've put then there's no harm in phoning and finding out, as Alopecia comes also for free Wigs.
I"m not sure about them being covered but my experience with a wig has turned me against them.. Mine flew off while walking across campus and that was it for me.. I just cut my short hair into a style and I get compliments all the time on it.. Now however I have braids, it's just more convenient. What ever you decide, good luck
Hello Torie,
Did you use the rubber cover on your head first that the wig surposed to cling to?....but like yourself i prefer my hair short now :)
I"m not sure... My cousin whom is a beautician made it for me, right on top of my head... I usually hold it down with bobbi pins, but that morning my daughter needed one and that shorted me and the rest is history, lol..
An online company, Vogue wigs, was where I purchased my wig. Not covered by insurance, but I was very happy with it.
Torie,
You need either a PVC rubber Mannequin which the wig grips firmly or a silicone one, on youtube there's video's of swimming caps being used also. :)

Under the Vogue wig I bought, I wore a stretchy, netted cap. Wore the wig all summer, windy day, windy car. It never budged. I am such a head sweater, that I would have died with a rubbery cap!
Beth,
The ones i've mentioned are surposed to really hold the wig but like you say to wear a rubber cap would be a testing to the head in general....this link as many designs for caps :)

I wore a wig for about 3-4 months. I was on medicaid, so it wasn't covered. I got a cheapo one for $40. My hair came back, thank goodness, because that thing is itchy and hot. I was self-conscious and was sure everyone would know it was a wig, but the first time I wore it out someone complimented me on my haircut.
I didn't pin it down well enough, and also had mine fall off in public when I tripped and fell. doh!
Carla,
That's why i keep my head in the skin head and i'm lucky to have the features and structure bone to carry it because i'd die of shame wearing one and it blew off...besides eyes from all directions on you :)

I have purchased several. Initially, I was told by my insurance company that it would never be covered, as it is considered cosmetic. I think they finally agreed, but wanted to control my choice for a wig. Really??? It would have been nice, just to have some of it covered, as I am continuing to work and need to replace my wigs about every 3 months.
In reference to the issue with the wig blowing off, there are some adhesives that are designed to be used in conjunction with wig caps. The adhesives work very well! Recently went to an amusement park with my children and used the adhesive. Rode all kinds of rides and even went on the water rides. I was really conscious about my "hair", but it didn't budge all day. I have to confess I was so concerned about it that I didn't use the wig cap at all. My husband had to peel the wig off on the way home. :-) (and it didn't negatively affect my skin, which was also a concern).
I say ladies when your on about wigs and me having my head skinned...i've seen some beauties in shops in the past and they look so real, your making me JEALOUS as i used to love my long hair :(
