Of course, there is no right or wrong answer. What type, brand, era, genre of music do you listen to when you're looking for comfort?
Ooooh, good topic! I often rely on my music to help me calm down and relax when things are rough, for one reason or another. I almost always have music on, but there are only a few things I listen to in order to relax. Often I find Enya to be very calming, and since I've listened to her for years, she is also very familiar. I have learned that sometimes familiar music is far better than being adventurous. However, that being said, I am a big fan of using Pandora to listen to music, finding it a lovely way to find new music that is like what I love.
On Pandora, I have several stations I use to relax. One of my favorites is based on two groups. Delerium and Conjure One have beautiful, imaginative music, and it provides similar beautiful music. I also enjoy listening to a station based on Moby. His music is unusual, but often it is gentle and interesting, leading me on journeys in my imagination. But when I am most distressed, or extra tired, the station I look to is my David Lanz station. Piano music (when not the lounge-y sort, or the kind just mimicking a song with lyrics) can be so very soothing to me. It makes me smile, helps me slow down and breathe deep, and helps me wipe away the stress that hovers over me.
Then there are times I want familiar music to sing with, to either soothe me or lift my spirits. That's when I go to music my mother played often when I was young. Beatles, Carly Simon, Doobie Brothers, Simon and Garfunkel, along with classic rock groups like Jethro Tull, Led Zepplin, Rush, Pink Floyd, and others.
So there you have it! ::crooked grin:: Celtic music, electronic trance, new age jazz, and classic rock! When it comes to music, I am nothing if not eclectic!
I love Sarah McLachlan. Her voice is so soothing and mellow. My newest fave is Bon Iver. My favorite song of his is Halocene. The video for it is beautiful! One other musician is Nichole Nordeman. She sings the most beautiful things. My favorites of her are "I Am" also "Every Season". I couldn't pick a fave from Sarah because I love all of her work! I save the goth metal, and grunge for when I mm having a good day. Lol!
I hope you like my list.
take care...
I listen to whatever suits my mood at the time. If I’m mellow I’ll listen to easy listening. When happy or if I need energy I’ll listen to dance music. When angry I’ll listen to rock. When overwhelmed I’ll listen to serenity music, those CDs with nature sounds and soft music. If I need a good cry, then it’s time to listen to a sad song. When I want to be spiritually uplifted I’ll listen to Christian music. Music is medicine to me.
I listen to praise & worship songs to encourage & comfort me. I listen to new wave (80’s) and Enya to calm me down.
I am a music lover, I can relate to music than anything!!! I listen to all kinds everything really. But it depends on my mood at time, it’s whatever fits to that mood at that time!!! Love music!!;)))))
smooth jazz and the blues, 70's rock, allison kraus and mountain music, i really like it all !!
it varies...but I found a long time ago, that it's hard for me to listen to Earth, Wind & Fire and not end up smiling and/or singing along
I listen to the oldies, that's what I listened to when I was in high school when I had no pains and problems because I didn't know anything about Lupus and was not diagnosed yet. The music puts me back to those years of fun excitement during those that's what I want to remember.
Great thread! How about sharing some? Let me start the ball rolling. Here's one from Celtic Woman which somehow expresses what many on this site aspire for, I believe.
Oh! I agree! When you listen to them, somehow "something happens along the way"! ;-)

Great choice, lablover! Listening to Sarah is like being a child lulled to rest in the 'arms of an angel, right? :-)
I love Holocene's music video, too!
