Has anyone experienced swollen gums? I woke up the other day and my gums were just swollen. First time ever and it was just the top. It was after a stressful night of dealing with stupid family drama. So not sure if that triggered it or not?.?.?
I’ve had swollen gums since I was quite little and put it down to just a dental issue until I started looking into autoimmune things…mine swell and get sore quite often, they used to swell so much when I had my braces on, that they’d actually cover the blocks themselves - that was the worst!
Best think to do is scrub your teeth quite hard when they’re swollen and use those little brushes/mouthwash especially for gum problems. If your worried, go see your doctor or dentist.

Hello,
I had this last week, too! They were so swollen that it hurt to chew. I went to the dentist to make sure that it wasn’t a cavity, he said no. I’m treating with antihistamines and blamed the swelling on my sinuses–it never occurred that it could be my lupus.
I’m not sure if brushing hard would be the best idea or if it could cause more soft tissue trauma. I would check with your dentist about treatment.

I have had this problem also, I am still in the first year of my dx so I am still trying to link together all of the problems I have had over the years. The past few months have been extremely bad, my gums hurt and are swollen and bleed alot. I have to be careful of what foods I eat when it is the worst. Yesterday my mouth was numb right behind my top teeth on the roof of my mouth and on my top gums...really strange. It was gone by the time I woke up this morning, but I have never had that happen before. I know that I need to go to the dentist but I cannot afford that with my budget. I barely get through as it is. I am looking into local programs for low income, but havent had much luck as I cannot even afford a little bit right now. I pray that my SSI goes smoothly, but we all know how trying that can be. Good luck, and I hope that you are able to find out what is going on.
Medications can cause this. I take really good care of my teeth and when I got them cleaned recently my gums were swollen and bled all over. My hygenist asked what meds I was taking and said it was from the cellcept. She also said that lupus can cause inflammation in the gums. I told her that when it happens I just floss more and that seems to help.
Try rinsing your mouth with normal saline. Mix it yourself: 1 tsp salt in 1 quart/liter of water or 1/4 tsp salt in 8 oz / 240 cc
I have Sjogren's as well as lupus and it's usually what I do when my mouth is out of control; swollen/burning gums, bad taste, sores, dryness and burning mouth. For me, it works better than the mouthwash
You got to hold on.
Thanks for all the suggestions!! It’s better today still a few sore spots but nothing like it was.
Yep my dentist said swollen gums and bleed a lot from lupus
Hi Swollen gums...as a retired Dental Hygienist...my educated guess is that your gums dried out from breathing with your mouth open. Once they have dried they crack and get inflamed. (We tend to get inflamed easier then most people.) You can rub a little vaseline on them to help protect them from drying out. Note whether you are also breathing with your mouth slightly open during the day. When the gums swell the old blood looses its oxygen and nutrients so if you push on them (they may bleed that is ok) your pushing the old blood out so fresh blood can come in and repair the tissue. I would avoid using a hard bristle brush (or any brush if very tender) as the end are cut off and have a sharp edge( like the end of spaghetti)
this will cut your now tender gums. Can just use finger and paste if not burning. Gentle flossing if you know how to wrap it around the tooth...otherwise you can really cut the gums with it. Notice if your gums have an odor or a taste that you did not have before. You should be concerned about Herpes at this time and may want to take
L-Lysine (check with health food store on benefits) You may need to have your teeth cleaned...be aware that SOME
dentist will want to do deep scaling...because of the inflammation. Charge a lot for each quadrant...instead of just doing
a general prophy. ...which should be all you need if you have been getting regular dental care and/or do not have a lot of calculus under the gum line. I would look for an older dentist that won't ream you!!!
!You can buy Glyoxide at drug store and some markets carry it as well. This will help bubble out and clean the areas. Let me know how you are doing. Hope this helps. Plus many good idea offered below...once they are healthy I like stimudents...FLAT edge goes against the gum.
Your toothpaste can burn you as well...salt water rinse and using salt and baking soda is more gentle and non-toxic
for regular use. The Lupus can increase inflammation like the Wolf...strikes where it wants!!!!Hope your smile is back soon.
Thank you so much for all the great information. I see my dentist in July so im going to bring it up. Hes a great dentist and ive seen him since i was old enough to go! Hes great and so understanding!
Mine get really sore sometimes. My dentist says everything looks fine though, so may just be inflammation
