Swelling

One of my major complaints regarding the symptoms of lupus, which presented early on, is swelling of the hands and feet. The worst time is while I sleep. When I wake up throughout the night, they are red, puffy and tender. In the morning when I wake up, they are at their worst. My fingers are like sausages. After a while, the swelling subsides.

But throughout the day, I get periods where my hands and feet just randomly turn red and throb. It can affect my face as well. It must happen literally 25 times each day.

Does anyone else have this? Have any meds helped with this?

Hi Jennifer

My fingers and hands swell, and my feet swell the worst. My right foot is swelling alot since my surgery. My feet typically are worst, but at the end of the day when I was working. My face will also feel flushed, it would come and go just as quickly. Since I've been off work, these have subsided.

Hi Jennifer,

I get all the same symptoms and when your hands swell they don't feel your own...all this is down to an internal flare happening with your joints which causes them to keep swelling off and off besides how much you rest.

Your only thin like myself so it's not like it's going to be through weight which some problems can occur more....if your able to take painkillers they ese it sometimes.

Does anything help you with this problem, Terri? I believe you are like me - conservative when it comes to meds. As mentioned before, I am on 200 mg of Plaquenil, but that has done nothing. I think my rheumy believes being on Prednisone will help this. As annoying as this symptom is, I am not ready to assume it would take care of it. For you, is it worse upon wakening? It is almost as though I am swelling up while sleeping because I am not moving. I agree, we are not heavy or retaining water. I guess with lupus, the blood vessels are probably swelling.....thus causing the symptoms. Not all lupus patients I have talked with have this problem, so I am glad to hear I am not alone.
