I met with my dr. And she suggested since my lupus has been very much under control for 3years that I see about going off of some meds to get pregnant. With the support of my rheumatologist I am now only taking plaquenil and trying to get pregnant. Has anyone had issues with trying to conceive due to meds? Also once baby comes were you able to breast feed? I am getting so frustrated. My rheumatologist’s wife has lupus too and he said to just be patient. They have 3 kids. Just worried about the whole process with lupus thrown in. Thanks.
I think the less meds you are makes perfect sense. Plus if you do want to breastfeed you might even want to check out the plaquenil.
I have heard about drugs getting in way of fertility. Makes sense even some foods you eat can get in the way.
Here is the bottom line....more pressure and stressed you feel is only going to make conceiving harder. Try having small glass of beer or wine..just enough to help you relax and just have fun trying!! lol!
If children are very important to you...you might now look into fostering a child or adopting an older (2 up) child. So many need homes or just foster care.
good luck
I breastfed and was on plaquenil. Prednisone is also safe to use while pregnant. What meds were you on? I can’t judge your fertility without knowing…lol For me I had no issues with getting pregnant but I was in my mid 20’s. I went through premature menopause at 32 though so I was lucky I chose to have kids young. My youngest was born when I was 35 and it was pretty much a miracle since I rarely had any kind of cycle. My rheumy treated me with cytoxan post delivery to keep me from flaring so I had to pump n dump for 48 hours (really toxic, can’t even share a bathroom). I have 3 boys and lost our daughter at 32 weeks due to Sjogren’s antibodies so I have been there done that with meds, pregnancy, and breast feeding. I did a ton of research prior to getting pregnant. A good site is the Johns Hopkins Lupus center. They have tons of info. I’ll follow this post or you can shoot me a message if you have specific questions. Good luck!
Thanks! I was on imuran but if hated the way it made me feel. I have been off if it for 6 months or so. I have done a lot if reading and research but my husband and I are worried about breast feeding. Some if the info out there is very conflicting. I know every person is different and what works for one person may not work for another but I appreciate the “real life” experience info. I am glad to hear that breastfeeding is not completely out if the question! My dr and rheumatologist have been very supportive but it helps to hear from people who are actually experiencing similar issues. Thanks so much for your feedback
Amy, Forgot to say that my oldest is 18 now and is an honors student with no medical issues, my middle son is 16, also an honors student and a star athlete, and my youngest is 7 with no health issues either. So breastfeeding while on plaquenil had no obvious effect on my children nor did using cytoxan and pumping and dumping. One word of caution, prednisone makes your skin less stretchy so if you are going to breast feed and take prednisone be prepared for stretch marks. No one warned me about this and the underlayers of my skin tore badly, had stretch marks that were over an inch wide and were very painful. Not saying that to dissuade you, it was just something I wish I had known. ; ) Oh, and be prepared for third trimester bed rest as well as many non-stress tests and ultrasounds. I would also shop around for a good perinatologist. They are the high-risk obstetricians and know far more than a regular ob/gyn about how to treat us and our precious bundle. Mine were awesome at answering any and all questions as well as holding my hand during my rare freak outs…lol I really wish you the best of luck. If you have any questions just ask, Annemarie
