Pregnancy and Lupus

Hi Ladies

Have any of you tried pregnancy after being diagnosed. I know I need to wean off some meds in order to make sure theres minimum impact on the baby. But what about flare ups and symptoms? Im told that lupus tends to flare alot in women of child bearing age.

Im not pregnant as yet...but would love to be at least by 40!

Thankfully I was past childbearing when I was diagnosed, my daughter is 26. She plans on trying to have two children. Her doctor believes it’s possible. They are working together to try and get her as healthy as possible before she tries. Her advise is to work very closely with your doctor throughout and not to tweak your meds on your own. We’ve known several relatives that have had successful pregnancies.

Hello
I been trying to have a baby for a wile.
I had 3 misscariages And been diagnost after my second misscarige .My Docteur told me that there is no med. that will effect the baby but the steroids will effect the mother .
About the flares I guess it’s unpredicteble because some feeling great and some not.But I’m sure that it will come for sure if not during the pregnancy so right after because of the stress and hormones changes and God knows what ealse .
If you will have interesting info to share with me I will be more than happy.

Hello,

I just joined, noticed this post and thought I'd share. Prednisone and plaquenil are supposed to be safe during pregnancy. There are some that are not, like methotrexate and I think remicade. I am currently 14 weeks pregnant and am on Enbrel, Prednisone and Plaquenil. The first time I tried pregnancy after being diagnosed I miscarried at 6 weeks but I wasn't off of the MTX long enough. As far as flares go, norco is supposed to be safe but I currently just take Arthritis Strength Tylenol. I am praying this is a successful pregnancy despite not being in remission. It is highly recommended to be in remission or at least under control before getting pregnant. I am taking a big risk but have lots of faith and managing it the best I can.

My baby is now 11 but when i was pregnant with her i only took tylenol pm. I was very sick and swollen my entire pregnancy and went in for iv for fluids a lot. I was told u have to be off the methotrexate at least 6 monyhs b5 grtting pregnant.

6 months before getting pregnant. Sorry for my typos

Dear Aria

Im saddened to hear that your journey has been difficult. I also 'hear' in you that you have immense strength and courage. All will be well in the end, if its not well as yet, its not the end.

Wishing you well, always.

I've been self weaning myself off my meds over the past year or so. I went from 250mg of Seroquel to just 30mg! I was taking 90mg of Cymbalta for the associated nerve pain. Unfortunately this one is the toughest to come off. It gives you 'brain zaps', almost like something stinging a rubber band against your brain and cause you to 'shudder'. It also resulted in the pain coming back tenfold! I was so sick I had actually collapsed once. So Im now on a steady dose of 60mg of Cymbalta. It does help with the tingling and numbing I experience daily.

I havent been to a rheumy again since my diagnosis. I had been put on Lyrica and Tegrotol. I hated it with a passion. So I didnt take it at all!

I have to go to a Physician/Rheumy who specialises in Loopies, someone who would stop thinking and saying 'its in YOUR mind!!'. Sadly, Im not very trusting of doctors. They drove to deaths door because they failed to take this seriously.

Another concern of mine is that Ive gone from a healthy 52kilograms to 80kilograms in a matter of months since diagnosis. Now, 3 years later I still battle to keep my weight at 76-78 kilograms! I know its important to sort this out as being a diabetic can complicate the pregnancy.

My journey has only just begun! I just wish and pray for a happy and healthy baby. Here's hoping....

Bubbly,

Good luck to you. Your dreams can and will come true. Just keep trucking on.

Thank you! Trucking on I am!

Hi! You are doing the right thing by researching and asking around. My lupus had just finally gotten under control after being on Prednisone over a year and a half. I weaned off the prednisone and only took plaquenil 2x200mg, tylenol, tramadol and anti inflammatory. I had almost given up conceiving and left if in God’s hands. On my birthday I was late and decided to test and I could not believe my eyes. Luckily the lupus calmed down a Lot because the pregnancy suppresses the immune system in most cases enough to keep the lupus under control. It was important to find a high risk doc familiar with lupus and he and my rheumatologist can get a hold of each other in case of an emergency. My rheumatologist does not want to resort to prednisone in case of a flare which thank God just had little flubs here and there relieved by rest and staying away from stress. I had a tooth infection for a month though, it could not be pulled since im still in the first trimester. I had to take antibiotics 14 days and because the lupus was under control I stopped plaquenil trying to minimize meds baby was exposed to. I flared up 4 days bedridden but got back on plaquenil by day two (my docs could not believe me and I regret stopping plaquenil but writing this in case it prevents someone else from stopping it.). Also very very important! See ypur dentist and dental hygienist for a cleaning. At least twice during pregnancy get a cleaning. This prevents infection in the gums which can get your immune system riled up. One last thing, try to find a wholistic book on conception and pregnancy. I found the Christian Mommas guide to pregnancy a great guide. If you are not religious there are many out there. Good luck to you!!! Baby dust!
