Guess soooo many of us have been through the steroid maze! I feel so bad for so many becuz of these steroids and their side effects. I am kinda with Janice on the Prednisone. If I don't take it I'm risking my life and my Rheumy says maybe someday we can think about getting off it, but definitely not now as the Lupus has attacked my lungs. The side effects? GRRRRRR...The Prednisone has caused me to have Osteoporosis, which in turn has caused me to have a broken back.....disks T-12 thru L-4 are fractured all due to this. I have numerous other back problems but not resulting fr the Prednisone, just added stressors that's all....lol My Rheumy is looking for a drug with the least side effects and something that will be covered fully by Insurance for the Osteoporosis. I was supposed to go today to see him, but didn't have transportation to go get my blood-work and he nds this. I also have Addison's (the adrenal gland prob). I also have Diabetes and RA....not side-effects, but just more limitations we have to contend with..... I'll tell what is getting my goat right now is lack of transportation to my appts! To think 5 yrs ago I had total and complete freedom and was working, and now I am totally dependent on others to go anywhere.....grrrrr
Okay, I am so sorry....this wasn't about me. But, on the subject, I couldn't sue them.....they have actually saved my life.....it's the unfortunate side-effects ;( So sorry you're going through whatever you're going through with these meds.....
I was working for a company that gives rides to people that are sickly. Do yall have companies in your area that does that? tanya said:

I think they have transportation for Seniors. I don't think you can get a ride to your Dr if your not a Sr. Especially, in OC CA everyone is suppose to be healthy, blonde & thin. Model looking. Prednisone is a necessary evil. It prevents organ involvement. I think some of these Rheumatologist over prescribe it. It's hard to get off of if you've been on it for a while. Unless you wean off it very slowly you run the risk of a crisis for too little cortisone. Your adrenals shut down & don't produce any cortisol if you're on Prednisone for a long time. Lupus treatment sucks as much of the disease. I've tried alternative treatment, Chinese herbs, accupuncture, Reiki, nothing worked. I'm getting IV Rituxan, hope it works, I'm out of options. I gained 100 Lbs on steroids & have Osteoarthritis, Type I Diabetes, cataracts, hump on my neck, I've never been below 5 mg for any length of time without flaring up. That's with 1,000 mg of Cellcept. I do believe having a co that provides rides to Dr appt & IV clinics would go over big

Thats what the company was for seniors but people would call and hire us for just the tranportation to and from Dr appt.. maybe u can look in to it. Its private duty type work... OC GAL said:

RE: Transportation (Tanya) Yes, we have transportation services, but it is curb to curb service. Meaning if I can't get to the curb then they can't help me. Well, I can't get to the curb becuz there are steps leading out both my front and back entrance and I nd help with the steps. There was an ambulance service that provided transp. for ppl that were disabled and they could use a stretcher to transport, but of course it would cost me $200.00....ea way!! Sorry folks, we do ok, but can't afford $200.00 ($400.00) just for a ride to the doc's office! It's really an issue for me. I've had to cancel appts becuz of this. My daughter works, and my husband works so neither of them can help. My husband works 10 hr shifts 4 days wkly, and is supposed to be off on Fri., but most of the time they call him in for Fri shift...and it's OT, so he will not turn it down.....hasn't turned down OT in 20 yrs and I don't think he's going to start now...it does help with 7 ppl living here ;0 My daughter has been using my car since I can't drive it, and it about brings me to tears cuz we were going to trade it in (hardly had any miles on it and in perfect cond when I drove it)for an SUV so our puppydog could ride in it....he can hardly fit in my car and WON'T get in my husband's truck ;( Now it's got soooo many miles on it and dings and scratches on it.....grrrrr The things we do for love....
OK, I've taken enough time on the transportation subject and I apologize since this thread started out on the subject of steroid use.....
My second opinion doctor stopped the Prednizone from my regimen, she stated prednisone has more side effects then good parts on a long term basis. I was told prednisone is only a short acting drug use for emergencies, probably why hospitals only give it sparingly.
True story. When I was in my early teens, I had an asthmatic cat, Oreo, she was allergic to her fur... (I swear its true) So, we had to give her prednisone and some other drug every day for 10 years, after the tenth year of regular usage, Oreo's kidneys became weak and she lost alot of weight and the rest was terminal. The doctor suspected it was continued use of prednisone. Now, I am not a medical doctor or anyone even a receptionist in the medical field. After that experience, I am wary of prednisone.
Now that I am off the prednisone, some of the problems I had before are coming back, but, I notice the problems are less frequent and I can handle them. Hopefully, this helps. I am wary of so many medications for this lupus, I just take the necessary ones and treat each symptom as it arises.
For unfortunate Lupus patients who have organ involvement or CNS involvement steroids & immune suppressors are a life savior. i've been on varying doses for 20 yrs sometimes as high as 1,000 mg over 4-5 days & as low as 3 mg. I probably would be dead or on dialysis for nephritis if it weren't for Prednisone. The Dr treating the pt has to weigh the risks vs the benefits. Prednisone is usually used for organ threatening Lupus ONLY.
I too have been on steroids for more than 25 years. After prolonged use sometimes a low dose is needed for support to the adrenals and doctors know to supplement during medical crises Addison's is not necessarily a consequence I was on Prednisone for 20 years and was off for 15 years with no problem except during surgery I got steroid I am now back on steroids due to multi-system organ involvement In spite of all the side effects dialysis and maybe even death are far worse Evil drug for sure but the lesser of 2 evils
Hi all, I need to gain some insight into Prednisone use/dose also.
How much is too much? I have been on 50mg for some months now & am very concerned with regard to possible side effects. I seem to be coping O.K. at present BUT I am worried about damage I can't see ( Liver, Kidneys, bone density etc). I believe I will have to slowely taper down from 50mg & I assume that will take some time.
Any insights will be greatfully received. Thankyou for your time Kaz
I was offered prednisone and refused it being a steriod but lately there's been some discussions on here about addiction to the steriod and trying to pull off it.
If i was you...i'd make a Discussion off it and you'll get more replys to what you want to know.
This site takes more Prednisone than Psoriatic Arthritis and Fibromyalgia combined!
I do not take it well, it just causes me too many problems that out weigh what I am to take it for. When Doc says Prednisone, I say "NO"! He gave them to my Mother, she could not tolerate them either, threw them away! That is what I think, Tanya!
Thanks Tez, have just created a discussion. Even loaded a pix! Sheesh what a newbie I am ehh?
