Prednisone

Im currently at my highest weight. I am 16 years old and have prom next month. Even on a low dose of steroids i am still ganing and very swollen. Doc just dropped me down to 12.5 mg two days ago. Any of you guys have advice on how to get this weight off fast? Iv been working out like crazy but it doesnt seem to help.

Oh Sweety, I wish I could give you a magic formula…I’ve gone from 125lbs to 214lbs… I have basically told all my Docs I will NEVER take another steroid ever again PEROID!! I’m 45yrs old now and still trying to lose this weight, best of luck!

I feel your pain! I am swollen and bloated too. Drinking lots of water helps with the swelling and will also help with weight loss. Try not to think about it too much, when you get off pred it will eventually come off.

Thanks guys. It just sucks being at my highest weight. I already told her i wouldnt go back on it for this long of a time. Thanks for the support i need it right now!

Something that has recently worked for me is decreasing my carbs and just eating healthy. I eat plenty of veggies. Don’t just stick with a few. There are lots of great veggies! No potatoes, bread or rice. You will still get the carbs you need to be healthy. (Veggies and fruit have carbs. ) The healthiest fruits and also lowest in carbs are the berries. And I eat normal portions of meat. Not excessive just normal amounts. If it is created by man, I don’t eat it. So no processed stuff. It has allowed me to lose 10 of the 35lbs I gained on prednisone. Best of luck. And stay healthy. For me that meant being on high dose prednisone for 8 months. We do what we have to do. Best of luck. You are a beautiful girl. A few pounds will not change that beauty!

I’m 46 n was on prednisone for 7 months. I gained 80 pounds. I felt just like you. Couldn’t get rid of puffiness for a while n had no self esteem. Please don’t hibernate and enjoy your prom. It’s hard when people judge the outside looks n have no idea that there is a disease behind the inner side of our bodies. The ones that love n support you are the ones who will lift u up n be there through thick n thin. I agree that eating better helps w flares. I juice now a few times a week. You get so many nutrients your body needs in one drink. Since being off prednisone I have lost 25 pounds. You can do it. One day as it comes.

Hey! im 20 and have been going through the same thing for quite some time. prendisone and other meds made me gain alot of weight quickly that im still unable to get off. Just wanted you to know your not alone! If you find a magic cure you better let us all know :)

Me too. I’m fighting preds weight. I’m on 5 mgs. I want to get off completely. But I guess I got to take it one day at a time and thank god for the blessings I do have although sometimes it’s difficult but I’m still in the fight

Hi dear. My highest predisone mg was 60mg and I gained 40lbs in less than one month. It’s been 2 years and I still have a pregnancy belly. The rest of me has slimmed down but I’m still about 20lbs higher than my norm. Steroid weight is hard to get off, even if you get off of it completely, it’s still going to take months to get it off. Sorry honey. Just know that it’s not in your control. I hope you enjoy your prom.

So sorry! unfortunately, that dose is still too high to lose weight on.try to have as much fun as you can at your prom!

I feel for you honestly I do! I have been on steroids for 4 years now, most of that time was spent on doses of 35mg a day! I’m
25 and was diagnosed with lupus SLE when I was 18!

I also have chronic urticaria, hypertension and a nerve condition that limits my exersize levels.

I gained 3 stone in 1 and half years but now I’m slowly reducing my dose and on 10-7.5mg I was able to loose 25lbs since January 2014.

It’s extremely hard work but I got results! I use my fitness pal app or if you don’t have that try to write a food diary and log everything you eat! Remember your weight loss is 80% diet and 20% exercise! If you find it hard to be mobile try to be stricter with your food. I try to stick to 1200-1600 calories a day and this helped me steadily lose on average 2.5lbs a week with very little exersize.

Simpler method, have smaller portions, drink loads of water, eat lots of veg fruit and protein too! Reduce your fat intake and make healthier choices e.g. Wholemeal bread, low fat options, potatoes instead of chips etc.

I have bad joints so I stick to walking…nice and easy! Start off lightly being positive all the time.

Steroids will make you bloat but I promise, you will shed the weight if your strict with your food as many days out of the week you can. BUT allow for treat days we are only human.

Enjoy your prom and I’m sure you will look amazing either way! xx

Lucy

P.S If I can lose weight on 15mg last year you can lose it on 12.5mg but it will take some determination and healthy eating! Remember healthy eating can be really fun and tasty too get a cook book and experiment? Xx

What can I say I was in the same situation as you i was 16 when i was diagnosed with lupus 16 just enjoy that you are still alive and enjoy prom its a once in a lifetime thing i went to my prom swollen

I'm so sorry you are going through this! I know exactly how you are feeling. It has literally taken me 4 months to lose 10 pounds since being off of Prednisone... Prednisone is no joke and even with trying NOT to gain, you just do! It automatically makes you swollen and makes you feel gross. No matter what your weight is, you go and have fun and enjoy your prom!!! Don't stress about your weight, trust me!! Your friends and family will love you no matter what you look like!! :)

I read your post and my heart broke for you. But this is the reality. Prednisone can really do a trick on your weight and your self image. This is where you put your positivity armor on. Everytime that you are tempted to think a bad thought about how you look, override it with a true and positive thing about you.

It is amazing how stressing about your weight actually makes you keep weight on. Go to prom. Have a great time. Dance, and have fun. You will never be 16 again. Those that judge you from the outside do not deserve you anyway. Hang tight with those that love you, inside and out.

I am struggling with the same stuff too. We are in the prednisone boat! It truly sucks but there is more to us than that.

Let me know how your prom goes.

Hi darling,

I'm so sorry to hear about your struggles. I really know how challenging this can be. I gained 40lbs in 3 months when I first started taking prednisone and it was the hardest thing for me. I went from a size 2 to a size 8...almost 10 (I am 26 years old)! I think the best advice that I can give you is for you to embrace what you're working with. You're still extremely beautiful and the right dress will still look perfect! Trust me! As your health improves and you're able to lower your dosages even more, you will see the weight and puffiness decrease as well! Unfortunately, the working out doesn't help much but instead helps you maintain...At my highest dosage, I was taking 40mg twice daily, and now I'm down to 5mg once per day! It is amazing to see the progress. I've recently lost 10 lbs in 2 weeks, from doing nothing. Ofcourse I don't feel as good as I did when I was on the higher dosage, but there's a give and take with these things. I've learned to embrace and love my new curves and what makes it even easier is having a BF that loves 'em too. Stay fly honey, and the confidence will radiate off of you!

Sorry I've went from 118 to 170, if there was some miracle way I would have done it by now. Hopefully you will have better luck.

Try cutting back on sodium. I retained lots of water when i was on it. But most importantly your weight doesn’t define you. I went through junior high and high school with the prednisone weight and i know its easier said then done especially at that age but hold your head up high. This to shall pass!

I will be thinking of you & wishing the very best for you. I feel that you should try to accept yourself 'as is'. That will I believe help maxamise all your efforts this month & have you looking & feeling light tall & glowing on your special night even if you have only lost a few pounds. I'm sure your family & true pals will all see you as beautiful too; so its just up to how you see yourself. After 2 &1/2 years I'm down to 6mg of Pred, so I do have some insight as to how you may be feeling. I'm sure it will be a wonderful night for you. Karen xo

Please enjoy your prom, just as you are, and don't let the prednisone weight worry you! You need to take good care of your health so you can enjoy these memories!

Hugs,

Lori

You are beautiful shine that smile at the prom!!!
