My doctor decided to put me on Medrol for 1 week to see if I respond to it (before trying methotrexate).
Should I expect the same nasty side effects (water retention, weight gain, etc) on this short 7-day course as people experience when they are on steroids for an extended period?
Any help is appreciated.

No most people are fine on that short a course and experience no weight gain or problems. Our “horror stories” of weight gain, insomnia, etc are usually from high doses over a several month period. Best of luck.
I just finished a week on a Medrol dose pack and only felt a little bit "zoomed" and my cheeks filled out a bit, (hardly noticeable to others). I feel much better.
I have been taking it for my flares for five years now. It is a great drug for me. I have a hard time sleeping and get moody but it does the job greatly. Sometimes the doctor has me take it in 4/2mg doses instead of taking the complete dose pack just to break the cycle of pain from my joints. You may get hot flashes too.
