Okay, my rheumy nurse just called me with blood test results. I had a follow up appt last week and she decided to do some blood work because I had been feeling rotten..........after having the abscess tooth pulled it flared up my tri-geminal neuralgia and I have been having all kinds of aches and pains and just generally feeling bad.......you all know, normal stuff with lupus.
Well my WBC is 3.8 , the normal range is 4.8----10.8 ......when they checked it in June it was 6.4 It has dropped 3 points in less than 3 months !!!!!!!! She is going to discuss my concerns with my rheumy and let me know if I need to get re-checked sooner than Dec...she said I might have to be referred to a hematologist !!!
Do I sound like I'm freaking out ? Yeah I am a little bit !!!!!! I am wondering if the abscess tooth had anything to do with that or has Lupus just thrown me a huge curve ball outta left field !!!
Has any one else had problems with LOW WBC and can shed some light on this new problem ?
Any help from my lupus family today is greatly appreciated .....BLESSINGS
Don't get panicking on this issue as it can be anything and it would'nt come from your abscess tooth i don't think...i'd say your Lupus, as there's always something around the corner where it's concerned and there's numerous issues which can cause this.
I suffer from Pernicious anaemia which comes from WBC and it showed itself 6mths down the line after being diagnosed with Lupus...if it is anaemia then you'll be very tied have hardly any energy and sleep more.
Here's a list of symptoms which comes from low WBC.
Thanks for the calming words and all the info.......you are always so helpful.......:) Tez_20 said:

Your welcome and i think it maybe Anemia because US readings are done differently to ours in the UK.
When they diagnosed me i was 8.0 that's rock bottom and to be ok where that's concerned for a woman it's 13.5...straight away i was put on folic acid daily and a b12 jab every 3mths and when my bloods are tested i usually run in between 12 to 13 :)

Smoky i've just looked at your profile regarding your meds and it's not your prednisone causing it...as prednisone causes high WBC's but this link explains more if you'd like to read it :)
Yeah Ann.....I was on antibiotics for 10 days before they would pull the tooth.....and the oral surgeon said he didn't think I needed to take any more after ...........
And I do not take any thing for nerve pain right now......the Dr had me on gabapentin a few years ago and it was causing me to have some heart and breathing problems.......so I am on nothing but prednisone, vitamins and calcium + D right now ....
And you are so right, I will not be surprised if my rheumy wants to wait until Dec........" hurry up and wait " right !?
Thank you Ann for the reply and the information :)
Anytime you take Antibiotic's always take probiotics as well as it helps the immune system regarding the Antibiotics as they lower our immune system even more and no wonder you was bad on the Gabapentin being a seizure tablet...anyone who does'nt suffer from seizures should never have them because they can cause seizures...i was under a brain surgeon who told me about that issue.
If you Rheumo does wait till December than your reading is on what they call border line...just underneath but even to keep a check on it.
It could be any number of things. My dad has low WBCs every now and then. When he goes to get it re-checked a few months later, it's almost always back to normal. He was referred to a hematologist once for low WBC and other weird labs that the doctors were concerned about, when the hematologist ordered a set of his own blood work, everything came back perfect. It's just part of how he flares... low WBCs and low platelets, it's his flare trademark. Try to relax as it could be any number of little things, or even a lab error.
For you great input and like i've stated it could be anything :)

THANK YOU for your reply.....and you are right ...it could be any little thing causing it, because with lupus, the little things end up being something more serious. I really think all this tooth problem and antibiotics started it ! :)
