Long term pain meds

Does anyone else used pain meds on a daily basis? I have been taking tramadol for over two years now. I started with one every few days, but now I take them at least 3x a day. they don’t completely stop the pain, but if I miss a dose, the pain is unbearable. I’m so worried I will have long term effects or become dependent and just have to keep taking more and more.

Hello TJ,

I've not taken tramadol, then only pain meds i've been on are paracetamol years back and i got addicted and coming off them for a nightmare hot sweats and irritability, then i was put onto iburophen no addiction there but was taken off them by my first rheumo and put back onto paracetamol 4000mg daily upto so fare no addiction as i'm watching myself.

Tradamol is an addictive drug and members will answer in due course but this link may also help about the addiction to the drug.

Hi, I was just prescribed Tramadol a few weeks ago and my GP told me it wasn't a narcotic? My orthopedic doctor told me to take 1 tablet every 6 or 8 hours. I took these last week, but have been tappering off this week. They make me sleepy, they help the pain some, but not that much. I take Meloxicam (Mobic) daily, and I really notice it when I miss a dose. It takes a couple of doses to catch back up for me.

TJ, if you're concerned about needing to take more and more, then you should talk with your doctor. I don't really expect a pain free day anymore, just a level that I can live with. I'm so used to it, I don't think about until I flare and it increases. Trisha

Hi TJ,

I was also told tramadol was not a narcotic therefore safer to take. However, I experienced a seizure like reaction which scared me. I couldn't get a response from my doctor because it was the weekend but my pharmacist kept in touch with me that day and walked me through the process of getting off of them. Some of my friends take it and don't have any issues.

After the series of pain injections - steroids, I was put on a lowest end pain med. However, I will only take 1/2 twice a day. I am like Tricia in that I don't expect to be pain free but getting the edge of it at times during the day makes it bearable. I've had members of my family with addiction, so I am extremely cautious....probably to a fault.

Be sure to talk to your doctor. It really helped me to be honest and to hear their reassurance that I was OK. Perhaps you have taken enough that it takes more for your body to respond...he may change your prescription. You know your body and the reaction to meds...be strong in your behalf. It is better to be safe.

Hugs,

Faye

Hello TJ,

How you feeling now since adding your discussion?...i do agree with Trisha though you should speak with your Doctor if you feel they're not enough.

Thank you all so much for responding. I have talked to my neurologist about it and she said that the problem with the tramadol will be that I develop a tolerance and will need to take more to get the same effect. I do not take more than what was prescribed, but my concern is that my days seem to be more and more painful. I feel like I’m getting worse not better, and a lifetime of pills is not what I want. I know I need to get use to the idea that this is my new reality…

I am taking neurontin and plaquinil, and the Dr hopes that these will help enough with the pain that I will be able to cut back on the tramadol. She has increased the neurontin, but it makes me so sleepy! I am no longer able to take mobic or any NSAID because of stomach bleeds and low platlets, but I have had two hip injection (one in the joint and one on the side). These helped quite a bit.

I’m sorry if I sound like I’m being a baby… I’m just so frustrated:/ I left my full time job of seven years last month and now work part time. My doctor wants me to quit working completely until we can get things under control. Financially that is not an option. I just feel like I’m losing everything. I miss working out with my husband and playing with my grandchildren! Ugh!
Thank you all for listening:) I am so thankful for this page and while I hate that you all deal with these same things, it helps to vent to friends that truly know what I am going through!

Hello TJ,

Your welcome and that's what we're here for to help one another best possible.

Well i hope the increase of neurontin helps but TJ according to how strong your Lupus is and what other autoimmune diseases you have with it...all these issues at times can make the pain alot stronger and i know you don't want a life time of meds but if you pulled yourself off them tomorrow just for saying sake...you would'nt believe after a while how your body goes down the tubes even furthur with pain...the meds do help to a certain extent but it's like my rheumo always told me, sometimes it becomes an issue of swapping meds about and testing several at a time to get the right meds which suite you besides the dosage.

Your not sounding like a baby far from it...your dealing with pain here that we all get and in some cases it can be worse than others but we're all suffering to some extent believe me.

To how your coping with working that's intirely your decision and how you body holds up to it but if your not coping good because of the pain, if you can cope otherwise conerning money i do suggest what your doctor said leave work alone...as it will only punish your body more.

TJ you vent away anytime mate and not to worry because if i get to the state where i'm mentally had enough i soon do a discussion as i know i'll get some good sense from member's who know what i'm on about....i can't keep drumming my hubby's ears all the time.lol

A large hug to you Terri :) xxx
