Were you able to obtain life insurance (outside of your employment) with having Lupus?
Yes but had to go with several smaller policies that do not require a health exam
Poobie any suggestions on companies to obtain a policy
That would be some valuable information. Please share.
Yes but it is term insurance and the term is up soon. Both my husband and I took out policies when I was pregnant with our oldest. He’s now 18. Lupus didn’t affect my ability to get life insurance. They were more concerned with age and family history of cancer and heart disease.
U read my mind.
I have gone through two separate companies (State Farm n American Fidelity) and got denied.
Please share, if you were able to get insured, even if its term.
I was denied because of my medical history (diabetes, lupus, high bp etc) currently not working. Please share.
Thanks.
Maggie
I have policies with Globe Life, Colonial Penn and New York Life.
I tried to get insurance and was turned down due to weight, even before I could tell them about diabetes or lupus, but I'm thinking if they turned me down for weight (I'm kind of average considering 2 out of 3 are now overweight), they sure would not cover me with lupus.
Yes i have some but its just enough to bury me
Thank you for all of your input - anymore company names?
I would call the lupus foundation of america or another non profit lupus organization and ask if they can help you find the best policy for you and your needs. If you are 50plus, AARP will also help you find the best policy for you. Plus, a local broker...in insurance, might help you as well.
Plus, if you have it for work, often you can pick it up if you leave and it might be cheapest you can find since they do not test you for your work policy it is just part of your benefits...enough for burial usually.
Here in Calif, i also could get it for my mortgage without being tested as it is something by state law that must be offered to all...so state laws might be different.
Two things...get just basic life insurance not annuity kinds. Just the ones that pay flat death insurance amount for your monthly or yearly payment.
2nd thing...make sure you check all the things that void the policy. They do sometimes sneak things in which might be reason you could do that would void the policy. Suicide it normal one...but weird things such as if you die by car accident and been depressed and it is your fault could void it. Just find a decent basic policy no even possibilities to give them to void it...smoking and drinking is often included if you have diseases now ...would smoking pot void it then??? if you ask have answers put in writing for that kind of question..
I did get it through prudential and so far they have been decent. But think about why you feel you need it...just for burial or burial and mortgage any hospital bills. My husband did enough to pay off mortgage plus allow me to live for few years at his salary of retirement age. I got enough to pay off mortgage plus bit more...but he has great retirement so he really did not need any ...this just help pay off any bills etc.. I got the better deal lol!!
But since he was healthy when we bought our policies...he was able to get more than twice amount of what i got at same price due to having lupus.
Now my brother who had serious health issues..autoimmune but in and out of ICU since high school and even before...but as young adult he was in ICU at least 4 times a year...he was not able to buy it even at higher rates. Remember if you do die...there are survivor benefits for spouse and children until they are 18. So that set his wife and kids up but she still had to work. Once SSI sets in, you get what ever is higher, what their SSI benefit would have been or survivor benefit.
Just want to remind people that survivor benefits are out there. good luck!
I was told yes if it had nothing to do with lupus, when it was explained it was if you had an actident
Thank you!

That is a good idea to contact the Lupus foundation, I will try that. I wish I would have taken care of this a long time ago. Now I’m 34yrs old, divorced with two kids. I’ve had Lupus 13 yrs and developed Hypercoagulation Disorder and Avascular Necrosis of both hips and I need hip replacement surgery but my blood disorder makes the surgery life risking. So now I really need a policy but with all I have going on I just don’t see how it will happen. It seems so wrong for me to have this surgery without any life insurance but my hip has been broken for almost a year. I’m on so much pain meds but nothing can take away this pain. I really need this surgery.
I too live in California. I have been shopping for LIfe INsurance for awhile. Can you share with me who your agent is or if you can recommend brokers.
I would love to cover my husband who is semi healthy (minor aches and pains), survivor benefits for my two kids and myself. We are both under 40.
Is there such a thing as a special needs plan? My son has autism. IS there a plan that will cover more for him in case I or my husband were to pass, so he can afford his therapies? Just wondering.
Would appreciate your feedback.
Thank you
