Is something in my eye?

Good Morning! I had a strange occurance last night. As I was reading I got the feeling that something was in my eye, maybe a hair. I go to the mirror and I couldn't find anything. My eye never teared, it just felt like I had this hair that I couldn't find! It then started feeling like that "hair" turned into a needle across my eye. My eye was so sensative to the light as well. I had to keep my eye closed. Has anyone else experienced something like that?

I have had the same happen to me. You MAY have Sjogren's.....I do. It is secondary to lupus. I would encourage you to do some reading on this site. There is a group specifically for it. I would consult with your rheumy and/or an opthamologist, especially if it continues. It sounds symptomatic.

I've had that happen. I would concur with Jennifer about the Sjogren's. I have it. It does need to be confirmed by an ophthalmologist or rheumatologist. As it was explained to me dead cells flake off the eyeball. Normally, they are washed away by tears but if the eyes are to dry there is no washing away. The remedy for that is artificial tears which in Canada you can get OTC. I would start with that even before a an official diagnosis. I had problems for years before being officially diagnosed and by order of my optometrist was using artificial tears. You should be able to get some help from your pharmacist. Since I am in Canada I don't know if giving you brand names will help. Just avoid drops that are not artificial tears. Though less expensive they are not good for your eyes. I hope you get some relief.

Thera Tears which is preservative free works well for me when this happens. You can buy it at any drug store for around $8.00. I too have Sjogrens. Let me know how it works for you! Good luck!

My eyes do this when I get around something I'm allergic to.

Hello Rosie,

There's possible issues which can do this...firstly the light your in, secondly what Sheila said Allergies and if you do have sjogrens and don't know it yourself....Like Jennifer said we have a sjogren's group on the main page where you'll find extensive information on eyes etc done individual for you to view.

Hows your eye been since you posted your thread.

Good morning!

My optometrist said that all people with dry eyes do not have Sjogren's. But, all people with Sjogren's have dry eyes. Please see a rheumatologist and optomologist or optometrist to confirm what you have.

Right now, the Sjogren's symptoms bother me more than the lupus.

Bless you.

Hello USAGURL,

Sorry to hear the Sjogren's is bothering you and that's one hell of a strong disease besides Lupus because although i have Lupus in the blood everytime my bloods are taken the sjogrens comes in abit more active than the Lupus and they say that the Lupus is actually fighting the sjogren's to over ride it in my system.

well JC having sorjgens syndrome makes you feel like there is someting in your eyes, like grit. I can't explain the sensitivity to the light, it might be a good idea to see your eye doctor. Good LUck. Many blessings and hugs

It could be as simple as severe dry eye. I'm on restasis for that. Use eye lubricant drops first to see if they help, if not see a dr

I've noticed, that when I'm really tired and wake up in the middle of the night, I'll have trouble opening my eyes and feel like I have something in them. I've only had that happen a few times. I never noticed it before I started medication. But my ophthalmologist said everything was fine, so I just attribute to be over tired.

Keep us updated. When I didn't use enough drops, I ended up with corneal ulcer from dry eyes! Caused pain. Best to get checked - I had a friend who had weird eye pain & sensitivity related to a migraine.

Like others mentioned - Sjogren's group has lots of info on dry eyes. Hope you get your questions answered.

Hi nates tired mom, hope that you finally gave up on trying to find the hair in your eye !!!! LOL Well for me that happened when i started taking plaqail ( might be misspelled ), just about everyday there was somethig going on with me eyes , so in Nov. 2011 my son made a doctor appointment for me , come to find out the med. that my LUPUS doctor has me on ( plaquail ) , was doing something to my eyes , which the eye doctor saids would happen - but understand the meds. have been helping me since i've been taking it. So when it came for me to see my Lupus doctor , i let him know what was happening - he says to me , that would happen over time to my eyes - WHY didn't he tell me of this at first B4 i started taking the meds. ???? I don't know still to this day , but am still takingthe mds. and NOW i wear glasses- bifocals at that !!! If it's not one thing , it is another with" Living with LUPUS" - right??? Hope that you get better and don't over due it with the eye drops !!! smile Make an appointment with an eye doctor .... Beverly L.

Hi Beverly,

Yeah, I finally gave up looking for the hair in my eye :)

From what I read you wrote, it seems you have the same trouble I do...the rhuemy dr NOT communicating with us as much as we would like! I really hate that. I've learned more about Lupus and Fibromyalgia (since I have both) either on my own or through online support group.

I think I'll make an appt. with the eye dr just to be on the safe side.

I have episclertis which is a inflammatory process of the eyes. It is were the whites of your eyes become inflamed. It feels like my eyes have something in them and I am very very photosensitive to the sun. I have to wear all the time very dark polarized sunglasses when I am outside. Sometime it is so bad I have pain in my eyes and I can not open my eyes outside at all. Bright light may have the same effect.

According to my ophthalmologist a lot of people that have lupus can develope episclertis. I have very dry eyes but I don’t test positive for sjogens. If you use eye drops, please use eyes drops that have non preservatives it them otherwise they too can dry out your eyes.

I wish you the best and hope you figure this out.

Hi Rosie,

Why your waiting to go an see a specialist also to get your eyes tested...if you book into an opticians just for a general eye test, they can see if you have dry eyes also. xxx

Hello Rosie,

I checked out Deenie's link she added you to see if sjogrens causes it and it does beside RA but read this Link on other symptoms where it can come from.
