I have a question does anyone else bruise easily? I have been noticing lately that i bruise very easily I am on Imuran 150 mg and prednisone, for example Wed morning I woke up with a huge bruise on my hand I have no clue where it came from and it hurts I dont remember bumping it on anything and there is nothing around me but pillows when i sleep... I need answers.
You need to have your blood counts done to see if anything is going on there On the other hand prednisone does cause easy bruising- sometimes I look like I have been in a bar fight with no known injuries just lots of bruises
I'm not on those meds, and I do bruise a lot. My Dr. said its actually coming from inside inflammation and then blood vessels break. Mine will get darker and darker over the days before it starts to heal. my Dr. said "no wonder you hurt, if that kind of damage is happening inside."
Yes, I do too. All the time also. My family teases me about it. However, it may or may not have anything to do with your Lupus. My mom bruised easily her whole life and even today @ age 84 she get them easily. So it could be DNA or your meds. Like the other one suggested get your blood teste. Otherwise you might have to just live with it like my mom and I do and my mom doesn’t have Lupus.
Thanks Everyone, I went and got blood work done a couple days ago and i checked them. My RBC is low, Vitamin D is low< ESR is high Platelet Count is high Hct is low, protein is high, Na is low and Hgb is low ...can anyone tell me what all this means for my lupus
High platelets would cause bruising/clotting Vit D is an easy fix. I know that most of my Lupie friends are on 5000-10,000 IU a day and it has helped me a ton with nerve pain and my central nervous system in general. Lack of vit D can cause symptoms of multiple sclerosis, and MS is so much more prominent in the Northern countries where people get very little sunshine, which is a main source of vitamin D. People with MS who take vit D have milder symptoms. It heals the central nervous system, including mood. I know others can help you with the other tests. You can also look them up online at a site called labtestsonline.org. Here's the 5000 IU vit D I buy. 1 year's worth for $12!! http://bit.ly/1duH1p6 Let me know if you want to buy these and I can give you a checkout code to get $5 off.
Hello Sheila, Thanks for the Information, I'm on 100,000 IU of vitamin D a week and my vitamin D level is still only 23 and i have been on it well over a year now... I was in the hospital for 3 weeks in july for seizures and left sided weakness they were giving me vitamin D because my level was very low.. I'm allergic to the sun (seriously) I have a really bad photosensivity like if i dont where the proper clothes i will end up in the hospital like i did in July

You need to ask your doctor about having your blood platelet checked. I started doing that and had petechia covering my legs all the time. Finally went to the ER once and found out I have disease called ITP.
I too have fairly severe bruising without incurring any apparent trauma. My worst bruising occurs on my legs especially if I walk for any distance at all. The bruising can be attributed to autoimmune vasculitis which can be a component of systemic lupus. Not knowing the specific numbers for your blood tests I can't be too specific, but generally when the RBCs, Hgb and Hct are low, it is an indication of anemia. The most common causes are iron deficiency or B12 deficiency and these can sometimes be differentiated by looking at the RBC indices. You didn't include those results in your post. An elevated ESR (erythrocyte sedimentation rate) is a fairly non-specific marker for inflamation somewhere in your body. It is elevated in an acute flare-up of lupus, vasculitis, or in any number of other conditions which need further testing to determine. A low vitamin D level also is associated with increased lupus activity as they are inversely proportional. Vitamin D should be supplemented. I take 5000 IU daily and 50,000 IU(prescription strength) weekly. Serum protein can be elevated in chronic inflammatory states or autoimmune conditions such as lupus or can be elevated due to a number of other conditions--even just dehydration can cause the serum proteins to appear elevated due to hemoconcentration. There are different types of serum proteins such as the globulins and albumin and these can be separated out in other testing to determine specificly which ones are elevated in your case. I hope this helps shed some light on your questions. If you have further lab results or questions I would be glad to help. Best wishes in your journey to beat this illness.
Thanks Shannon she checked my platelets when she did a blood test is that not the same thing as you're talking about

Everyone with Lupus is allergic to the sun. It's one of the diagnosing symptoms. We each get different symptoms, but almost all of us react. Tat's freaky about your vit D. Sounds like you need an endocrinologist to find out what is wrong that is using so much vitamin D.

Yes, I sure do because I take i urban also, it happens on the top of both feet and the brusing is dark and the size of my hand. Hope you feel better sista, stay strong. I been sick all week. Stay in touch…
I bruise extremely easy! I suffer from Idiopathietic Thrombocytopenia and I have to have my CBC w/ diff checked every few months to check my platelet levels. My last count was 150,000, which is this highest my platelet count has been in over 10 years. Unfortunately, the doctor told me to not get too excited because the size of the platelets (which is what really matters) wasn't good. Some of them were too big (causes easy clotting) and some of them were too small (causes easy bleeding). I'm not on any prescription medications besides Celebrex 100 mg twice a day for arthritis pain.
I was on Imuran now methotrexate, soon to replace that with cellcept,I don't know if its the medications or what ,but I have had some pretty nasty bruises. Some get really big to a little scary, make sure to let your doctor know.Hang in there and Merry Christmas.
I have low platelets…ITP. This causes bruising. Mine are about 60,000 now. I’ve had them get super low. You absolutely should have yours checked, if you haven’t already. Some meds can cause a temporary reduction of platelets. But lupus patients are somewhat prone to ITP. Did you say you take 100,000 IU of vitamin D??? This sounds super high. I take 4,000 daily and this is considered a little high. I take half am and half pm. This has helped me feel better. Not sure it has helped the platelets particularly. I DO think eating healthfully ( no sugar, no junk food, reduction in carbs, lots of veggies etc.) might very well help both at least a little.
Hi Mizzshiree, since being diagnosed I have noticed that I bruise very easily, they also take a long time to resolve (especially in my legs). Sometimes I bump into something and know that’s going to bruise, other times I have no clue where the bruise came from. I hate getting a headache because Advil or excedrine migraine work best for me, but also make me bruise easier!
