Medication

This lupus diagnosis is still pretty new to me. My rheumatologist has started me on prednisone, naproxen, and azathioprine. I have gained a lot of weight, have a lot of bruising in the abdominal area, a lot of abdominal pain, and random spells of dizziness. Is this a normal reaction to the medication?

Hello Brittany,

Prednisone is a steriod medication and most likely that's where you weight gain as come from...we have members who will answer in due course as we have loads on the prednisone....i was offered it in the day unit and totally refused it through being a steriod.

Naproxen is a none steriod drug and is also a painkiller for the joints and swelling and azathioprine is an immunesupresent which helps carm the immune system down.

The other affects your having could be coming from the meds you've not started on but Lupus is also known for causing stomach pain.

It maybe worth asking about Plaquenil which is a good medication and is not a steriod it carries side affects like any other med but all individuals react differently and it helps discoid Lupus of the skin besides Systemic Lupus.

Hugs Terri :)

Hi Brittany,

Im also fairly new to this but also have the random bouts of dizziness & nausea. I discussed this with my Dr and wasnt sure if it was from the Plaquenil or the Prednisone Im taking. The Dr couldnt give me an answer either but when I was briefly off the Prednisone, the dizzy spells stopped. After I started taking it again, they came back. So I'm guessing, for me it's the Prednisone. I really don't want to be on the Prednisone, but it's kind of a trade off. I know I'll be sick / dizzy off & on through out the day while Im on it or I get severe inflammation and in pain all day without it. For me, at this point, it's the lesser of two evils.

Im also on Naproxen and Prilosec. The Prilosec is suppose to help with stomach issues. I didnt have any stomach issues before but the Dr put me on it as a preventative measure. You might want to ask your Dr about that to help with your stomach pains.

Best Wishes & Hope you get some answers & feel better.

Wonderful, I have my rheumatologist appointment next week so I will definitely talk to her about it. Thanks for the info. I’m still trying to understand the disease and figure out why I feel the way I do. Thanks again.

Thanks I will definitely have to make a list of these medications so I can remember to talk with my rheumatologist about them. Thanks again.

Hello Brittany,

I'll pass you a link onto your profile of all medications taken for Lupus and the way your feeling like you are...is Lupus attacks our immune system and when we get a cold etc it does'nt recognize it so our bodies can fight the germ, instead it enters as a foreign body to Lupus and Lupus attacks our immune system and it makes we low.

Always try your best to keep away from people colds or virus's.

Hugs Terri :)

Thanks for all your help. I really thought I would be alone with this diagnosis. I’m really happy that such a support system exists.

Brittany you'll never be alone as fare as you have us...LWL is my 2nd family and i'd be lost without the lovely friendship and support from members and you'll feel the same in time :)
