Changing Doctors

I am going to see a new rheumatologist in August. My question is can my current one cancel my prescriptions if she finds out before I go. After the last appointment with her where I got yelled at for going to an Urgent Care when my wrist hurt so bad in would put me on the floor, and her number was out of service for a week and my PCP was on vacation, and the F word was used in almost every sentence she spoke to me, I am worried. She hasn't sent any of my info to my PCP even though I signed the paper to have that done, so I will have to request my records from her.

that's outrageous! Try to find out who her superior is and make a major complaint...you have the right to see whatever dr you want for whatever reason you want. Let your PCP know you've signed for your medical release, but the rheumatologist isn't complying. Maybe your PCP can help.

She works for herself so there isn't much I can do there. My PCP is going to try to get my records so he can send them to the new Dr. My PCP is the one who encouraged me to find someone new after the Rheum blew me off when I was have bad vertigo spells and migranes. The PCP got me in with a neurologist immediately.

It's against the law. However she may charge a substantial fee for getting them copied. Make a complaint to the medical board.

What did the neurologist say/do?

You got to hold on.

You need support from medical community…1…write ethics board…2…get your pcp to get records…if not dont worry…tell new dr everything…3…she cant cancel meds…its illegal…4…get a therapist…
Not every doctor is a good doctor…
Do the next right thing for you…
Find an alanon meeting…or church group…or community group…live your life the best you can everyday…stay strong…

Thanks for the info. This all started with getting chewed out over seeing a nurse practioner at Urgent Care about my wrist. She had run some blood tests and called me to say one of my proteins was off and I needed to follow up with my rheum. The rheum was mad and said nothing was wrong with them and I needed to f****** not go to urgent care because the f****** NPs don't know a f****** thing. She gave me a prescription for prednisone if I had bad pain again. I wasn't happy because I do not handle prednisone well, but I didn't want to tick her off anymore. That was at the end of January. I decided to give it one more shot with her, mainly because the thought of starting over with someone new was overwhelming. At the beginning of March I was sick for several days and the pain was intense. I couldn't afford to be off work so I took the prednisone. It was only 10 mgs that I took for 4 days. My BP skyrocketed, migranes, shaky. I stopped taking it. Had the 1st vertigo episode. I figured it was after effects so I wasn't too worried. Then the vertigo continued. I called the Rheum on a Monday. I explained to the receptionist (she does not have a nurse) that I had been off the prednisone at that time over 2 weeks and over the flu for 3 weeks and the vertigo was happening more often. On Friday the receptionist called back and gave me the message that the Dr said to stop taking the prednisone and wait till I was over the flu and I would be fine. I said I already had and asked to talk to the Dr. and was not able to. I called and made an appointment with my PCP. He had me get my eyes checked first, and when that was cleared he sent me to a neurologist. She had tests done to rule out MS and a couple other things. Thankfully those were clear. The neurologist put me on another med that has eliminated the vertigo. I set up an appointment for the new rheum but its not till August. Last Thursday I called for some of my refills and they had to get them approved by the Dr. I went in on Saturday to pick them up and found out that they hadn't heard from Rheum. The one med is one of those you cant stop suddenly. The pharmacist gave me enough to get me through the weekend. They refaxed the request on Monday. No answer. On Tuesday I called and was told that the rheum was out until the following Monday and there was nothing they could do. I called my PCP and got an appointment the next morning. In the middle of the appointment, my phone starts vibrating. It was the pharmacy so I answered it. They had just gotten approval for the med. I was glad, but at the same time upset because I had wasted time and money. My PCP asked when I saw the new rheum and I told him August. He told me not to burn bridges with the other one until then. He is going to try and get my records so he can send them to the new one.

Thank God I live in Canada! I feel so bad for you....I am a retired RN and I have NEVER heard of any doctor talking to anyone like that! I take many pain meds and I need them to move around. The pain is awful. Not only that, I suffer from kidney and lung involvement. I have suffered kidney failure three times and I have had pleurisy many times. I have a Rheumatologist, Internal medical specialists along with a Dermatologist. I am one very lucky woman. I like and respect all of them!....I would loose my mind if I had to go through what you do! I take Morphine for pain! None of my doctors question the others. Oh, I also take Percocet for breakthrough pain! ...I did not understand one of the posts, here(?)..Why go to Alanon? They sure as heck wouldn't help you with any pain reliefe! Please pardon my language but this makes me very angry! If you are ill, you need help from the medical community not ridicule! You should not fear your doctor!! Please get some help here and don't be scared to say what meds you take! We are here to help one and other, no? :)

At this point, I am on Trazadone-anti-depressant for chronic pain and to help me sleep, Xanax for anxiety, and 2 different BP medicines (one because I get Raynauds and the other because of the vertigo). I have the prednisone but wont risk that again, and Skelaxin if needed. I take quite a bit of ibuprofen for the pain. I was on plaquenil for a year and had to stop due to eye damage. So basically now I am on meds to help me sleep and keep me calm. On good days I just ache all over. Bad days....well they just tear me up. I keep working because its just me. I usually nap for at least 2 hrs after work to get through the evening. I am hoping that the new rheum will take a different approach and I can get some relief.

And I thought doctors had behaved bad to me....I am totally shocked that the doctor felt she could treat you that way. I don't honestly know what I would have done in that situation. I do understand about not burning your bridges. The truth is you wouldn't probably accept that behavior from anyone else so why should that doctor get away with it. I am so glad you are changing to a different doctor. Get established with your new doctor and then I would sit down and write a serious letter to let everyone know about this doctor. I googled who you should contact and here is what I came up with...

1. file a voluntary Medwatch (www.fda.gov/medwatch) report or call 800-fda-1088

2. contact state medical licensing board and file a complaint.

3. contact the state health dept.

4. file with consumer complaint such as Better Business Bureau

5. Contact the State Attorney General's Office and file a complaint against their business.

Honey you so deserve better. Take good care of yourself.

Sending you a hug,

Thank you so much. I am still getting adjusted to being open about all of this.

Hello, am missunderstanding this!! How will she know that you will be seeing another doctor if you don’t tell her?? And how did she find out the urgent care? She can’t stop the prescriptions from being filled if you decide to see another doctor. That sound crazy, you can report her to the doctor assication board. And also about your records , if you request your records she have to give you your information that is your right, and if you signed papers for her to release your records to any doctor she have to do that.but cursing you that is totally unproffessional-What kind of doctor is this -Really??? You should report her just for that, that is totally not acceptable, not for me. Hope things get better and turn out good…Beverly L.

Had a PCP like that. I called my health insurance and they said that a patient has rights. A dr. can chose not to do business with a patient, but the patient has a right to not go to a dr. In my case, I went to see that dr. and told him he was fired!

The new rheum want my records sent to him. My PCP is going to try to get them so he can send them. He was supposed to be getting them all along. My rheum is 150 miles away and I wanted someone close to know my history. She just hasn't sent him anything. She found out about about Urgent Care because they faxed her the blood test results.

Like Norma, I too am glad I live in Canada. Our medical system isn't perfect by a long shot, but I'll take it any day over what many of my American friends have had to put up with. I echo what others are saying; when you are free of this pseudo-healer report wherever you can and use word of mouth to describe your experience to anyone who will listen.

It is against the law for her not to give you your records. Every patient has a right to know whats in their files. If you sign a medical records release to have them sent to a new Dr. she has to comply by law, no ifs and or butts about it. And I believe it is free of charge that way. IF she gives you a copy she can charge you per page that she gives. It can get expensive that way, but at least you'd have your own copy

I cant believe the treatment from your doctor. Move on asap.

One thing we need to change, though (lobby) is to open the health files to the patient. Teachers could write hurtful info about a student to predispose the new educators about this new student in their classroom. Not anymore. Now the family has access to the file and teachers stopped this awful practice. Drs. need to be held accountable to their professionalism.

Hi, I totally agree with you! It is hard enough that we have to deal with Lupus stuff daily and for the doctors to act crazie with us , sometimes I wonder if they should have these jobs. I understand that they might want to do their best , and help but being rude is another thing!!! It just not right …Beverly L.
