Car Wreck - Aftermath

Hello - I was involved in a serious accident a week ago Wednesday. My car was totaled as was the other persons. Thankfully, no one was seriously injured. I have some bruises and was sore all over for days. But i have some lingering fatigue that I cant shake. The soreness is gone - I am functioning close to normal levels and yet I am still so tired. Is this normal? Also feeling slightly depressed over the accident and life in general.

Curious to know if the trauma of the accident could cause a flare in the disease process.....which would then cause my depression to worsen.

I appreciate your thoughts....

Heather

I had a car accident last year on my way to work and I was swollen and disoriented for at least a day then went into a flare. Maybe any trauma our body sustains causes a flare. I don’t know about depression, it’s not a symptom of lupus.

Yep, even an accident can cause a flare, any kind of stress can lead to a flare. While depression is not a sign of lupus its definitely part of it, chronic illness and depression kind of go hand in hand. Hope you get to feeling better soon.

Yes yes yes!!! I was involved in two accidents on the expressway last February and June. Both were the other persons fault and it was in rush hour traffic going to and from work. Both accidents left me in serious flares. I didn’t even know I had lupus at the time so I was just treating with Physical therapy, which wasn’t working! Once I got on plaquenil for the lupus, my year long flare finally ended! The auto accidents take a bigger toll on your body than you can imagine. Even before lupus, I was in a car wreck where someone ran a stop sign and totaled my car. Although I didn’t have lupus, it left me feeling like I had gotten hit by a train. So if I compared the wrecks before and after lupus, I’d say they were both bad, but the accidents that occurred while I was sick with lupus left me feeling bad for soooo much longer. And personally, feeling bad for that long tends to lead to depression. You are not alone! If I were to get in another accident now, I would skip urgent care, the chiro, physical therapy, etc. and just go see my rheumy (unless I were significantly injured in the wreck of course. I’d probably ask for a week or two of steroids and pain meds to get me back to normal, and rest for a week straight. No cooking, no cleaning, just rest and relaxation. I don’t have kids so this is an option for me and one that works when I am in a BAD flare…I know it can be difficult to schedule resting into a pressing and busy life, but there really is no replacent drug or treatment for good old fashioned rest. I hope you find some peace and relief! You are not alone!!

I have been in three accidents (none my fault) and each one had me laid up for months. In fact I’ve never fully recovered from the one that totalled my Suburban. A 17 yo girl blew a stop and I broadsided her at 50, I had no stop, came around the curve, going the speed limit, and there she was. The stress threw me into a horrible flare and the back and neck injuries I sustained didn’t help matters. I had horrible nightmares thinking I had killed her and since both of my older boys were beginning drivers at the time it just compounded it. Resting is the best medicine. In my case I had to up my anti-depressants for a while and take ativan occasionally. I still have trouble gripping the steering wheel from nerve damage and I’ve been battling severe sciatica for the past six weeks. I highly recommend getting checked out just to be sure that your neck and back are ok. My youngest was fine thanks to his car seat. Give yourself time to rest, to feel whatever emotions come your way, and make a list of what you need to do to replace your car. I only had two weeks of rental car coverage so I had to find a new car while my back and neck were still a mess. Bad mistake. The car I chose ended up being so uncomfortable 6 months down the road that I had to roll up towels to make the seat comfy. So sorry this happened to you, I hope you feel better soon.
