I have had the butterfly rash on and off very mildly for awhile but the past week it has been way more pronounce and my face feels like its on fire!!!!! Just curious about the rash as it seems to be more of a new thing. It has never showed up when ive been in the hospital or at the clinic. And if you know why my face feels on fire?
Inflammation of anything makes it go hot mine does it… I normally get the malar rash when I’ve overdone it like if I’ve had a long day and stuff and I’m totally fatigued and normally have a temperature too which doesn’t help the heat… Try putting something cold and soothing on it like a cold mousturising cream from the fridge or a cold flannel
Thanks so much I might give that a try! I went to school this morning so I am pretty wiped out....
I have one every day, and there is a new rash that is more bumpy, almost like bad acne. Do either of you get that?
My rash always makes my face feel very hot. I have Cloderm cream that helps and I use a cool washcloth also. My rash is very bumpy. It’s raised and has a conclave in the middle there are some pictures on my page of it.
mine Isn’t bumby just super hot. i think im working on a flare though been pushing really hard all week and now im starting to feel it.
Mine goes bumpy if I scratch it other than that it’s just red cheeks
Hello Louters,
Mine first appeared in my late 20's deep red and raw looking and it was hot like yours but did'nt itch and that only appeared down to pure stress through my ex and a divorce going on...it lasted for quite a few months and never add it again till recently at 45 put it did leave a brown pigmentation mark on my face.
You maybe in a flare which is causing it...this info on it may help you even more.
Hugs Terri :)
The symptoms of a lupus butterfly rash can be mild in some people while they can also be severe in others. The rash in the shape of a butterfly can be scaly in severe cases and can be just a patch of light red or pink colored skin in some. Whether it is a rash on the neck or chest, if it is exposed to sunlight, it can become worse and might even spread to other body parts. Another factor that makes the symptoms severe is stress. A person who has a butterfly rash and is under tremendous stress or anxiety, might see his condition worsening.
Treatment
Butterfly rashes caused due to lupus have no permanent cure. The only thing medical treatment can do is to reduce their flare-ups. Doctors usually recommend non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs as well as antimalarial drugs to minimize the symptoms Of SLE. Sometimes, immune-suppressive medicines might also be prescribed if the symptoms get severe by the day. Application of topical cortisone creams helps in minimizing the rash. For the ones caused by Rosacea, taking oral antibiotics or applying them in a topical form aids in reducing the inflammation and redness of the rash.
An effective home remedy is to apply olive oil or vitamin E oil on the affected skin, leaving it on for twenty minutes and then washing off with cold water. For rashes which have spread to all the body parts, taking a bath with water in which oatmeal has been added will help in quicker healing.
Along with the treatment, taking certain precautions such as not stepping out in the sun in the peak hours, applying sunscreen with SPF 30 and above when going out in the sun and eating a vegetarian diet which is low in fat, will help in preventing the symptoms from getting worse.

Thank You so much that helped a lot! I have been dealing with a lot right now trying to get things straightened out with school and disability stuff. Seems like its never ending......
Hello Louters,
You do need a steriod cream though to help ease it and if you see a Dermo or your GP the cortisone cream is good but use it till the Butterfly rash removes and then have a break for 6mths as it's an aging cream to the skin but mainly the face.
Stress, depression the lot makes it worse and if you have Rosacea of the skin like my sister as then it makes it look even more severe.
This is my last outbreak of it :)

"This is why it's called the Butterfly rash"
Thank you for the tip! We are in the middle of switching insurance so the next time I see my doc, I am going to bring it up. This is the first time I have ever experienced the rash at such a severity.
Mine is hot if I am in lit, but if not it is just red and irritated. The bumps started a month or so ago and look like Bad acne, even though it’s not. It itches like crazy! The sinus area get hard and usually itches regardless of sun. The red around my eyes increases with flares, and becomes puffy enough to keep my eyes closed in the morning. I use A&D ointment to keep it moisturizer and heal up the scaring caused by skin stretching and deep tissue damage. Nothing keeps it down or helps with the flaring. My face gets heavy on one side and slack. It is usually hard in that area when it does it. This is besides moon face from prednisone.
It started clearing up a little when I was doing well a few months back, but that has changed. I will try to get a picture so you guys can see.
Hi Louters,
I wish you the best of Luck and the rash being so severe is usually down to stress mainly...so i hope it works in your favour when seeing your specialist and in the meantime take photo's of it to show the specialist incase it wares off before hand...i took photo's and printed them off for my dermo to see and he's filed them with my records.
Terri :)

DEAR LOUTERS: I NOT ONLY HAVE THE BUTTERFLY RASH, THEY NOW SAY I HAVE ROSAYSHA. (MIS SPELLED)
I WORKED WITH PAUL MITCHELL FOR YEARS ON THE EAST COAST.
ON THE FACE. I AM DOING EVERYTHING. CAN YOU IMAGE I USE TO WORK FOR PAUL IMITCHELL SR. AND I KNOW MORE ABOUT HAIR THAN YOU CAN IMAGE. I FOUND OUT ON SOME PEOPLE THE SCALP GETS SCARED FROM THE DRUGS. THAT CLOSES OFF THE BLOOD THAT NOURISHES THE ROOT. SO, MANY PEOPLE DO NOT GET THEIR HAIR BACK IF IT SCARS.
THOSE THAT HAVE HAD LOSS OF HAIR. HOW LONG DID IT TAKE BEFORE IT CAME BACK? WHAT DRUGS MADE YOUR HAIR COME OUT, WAS IT MESTRX. OR STERIODS??????
ALL I CAN SAY NIXON SHAMPOO FOR THINING HAIR IS GREAT!! THAN IF YOUR HAIR IS WEAK YOU NEED PROTEIN. IF IT IS DRY YOU NEED A MOISTURE TREATMENT. WHICH ONE DEPENDS ON WHAT TYPE OF HAIR YOU HAVE.
IF YOU WOULD LIKE, YOU MAY PICK MY BRAIN BECAUSE PAUL AND I WERE IN THE LAB TOGETHER MAKING SHAMPOOS. I KNOW WHAT IS GOOD AND WHAT IS NOT SO GOOD.
JUST STAY AWAY FROM THINGS WITH PARABEN IN IT (WAX USUALLY A CHEAP FILLER ADDED TO SOME SHAMPOOS). DID YOU KNOW IF IT SAYS PROTEIN, THEY ONLY NEED A EYE DROPPER FULL TO MAKE THE CLAIM IN A BOTTLE. THEY GET AWAY WITH A 300% MARK UP ON THE HAIR PRODUCTS!! WE WERE SAYING THAT IT TAKES 3 DAYS FOR THE HAIR TO ACTUALLY DRY?? WHAT DOES THAT MEAN? IT MEANS IT TAKES 3 DAYS FOR THE CUTICLE LAYER OF THE HAIR TO CLOSE BUT, MOST OF US DO NOT WAIT FOR THOSE 3 DAYS. BECAUSE WE SWEAT WE ASSUME OUR HAIR IS DIRTY. SWEAT IS JUST SALT. A GOOD RINSE AND SOMETIMES A CONDITIONER, AGAIN IT ALL DEPENDS ON THE TYPE OF HAIR YOU HAVE.
ASK ME
MICKEY AND RUSH
THEY MAKE A MIS DIAGNOSIS. IT IS SOMETIMES NOT THE BUTTERFLY BUT ROSASHA(mis-spelled) so sorry.
CHECK IT OUT WITH A SURGEON WHO DOES PLASTIC SURGERY THEY KNOW MORE THAN A SKIN SPECIALIST.
BELEIVE ME.
