Antibiotics and Lupus

I don't want to bore all of you with this long story - suffice it to say I have been feeding and sheltering a stray cat who is now pregnant and needs to be trapped and given to a rescue organization. The other night, I had the stray almost in the trap when my cat, Bailey, came flying through the living room and out the deck door where I was sitting. He and the stray fought, then jumped off my deck into the rain and darkness. I spent two hours outside with a flashlight trying to find my cat, walking on really steep terrain. I finally found Bailey and got him to a door of the apartment complex. I opened the door with him in my arms and he bolted back outside. Scratched me really bad on the abdomen. Then I searched again and saw him and grabbed for him. He panicked and turned around and bit me really hard..in that soft pad between the thumb and forefinger. It bled and bled. I finally got him, got inside and down the hall to our apartment.

The next day I told a couple of people what had happened and they sent me to the doctor (not my usual one), who has put me on antibiotics. Evidently they are worried about infection, particularly since I am on several immune suppressant drugs.

I don't know if it is the two hours in the rain and cold and hardly being able to walk on this steep yard or the stress, or the antibiotics, but I just feel awful. Yesterday I could hardly walk. Today I'm in my usual pain, but not like yesterday...I'm still absolutely exhausted, nauseated, foggy - you all know the drill.

In addition, I have a colostomy and the antibiotics are giving me diarrhea which is not fun when you have a bag..

I guess I don't really have a question, just needed to vent and let you all know how sorry I am feeling for myself right now. AND, it's going to snow the next few days...

Hi Susan,

Sulpha antibiotics cause lupus flares for me and I have read that this is common for others with lupus. What is the name of the antibiotic?

Take Care

Meg

I don't have the bottle near me right now. I know it's not sulpha because I am allergic to sulpha. It starts with an A (not amoxicillin). I was going to stop it but a friend of mine who is a nurse bullied me into fear and determination to keep taking it. I can survive anything for five days...I guess. Susan

You might try a probiotic for the diarrhea if you haven't already done so. Antibiotics always give me diarrhea and I had tried probiotics in the past to no avail, but the last time I was on them I tried a new probiotic and for the first time, no stomach upset. The one I used was Schiff digestive advantage gummies. I take them fairly regularly now and have much less stomach trouble in general.

Hi hon,

You should call your regular doctor. I was told by my Rhuemy that if you are having diarrhea your meds are not getting into your system. If you haven't had a problem with those anti-biotics before it may be a reaction to the med or an infection. Either way, I don't think you are getting the benefit of the antibiotic which is so VERY important if you are on immuno-suppressants.

Just a suggestion but I hope you feel better soon.

Hugs,

DeAnne

I am sorry that you are not feeling well. Praying for some relief!

So sorry you do not feel well. I take a laxative everyday ( long story for another day). Sometimes I get bouts of the runs, and I take acidophilus. Yogurt, rice, and applesauce become my diet until I feel better.
Your cat incident must have been stressful! If you do not feel better please call your Dr. You may need to follow this up closely. Please take care of yourself. Sending prayers and gentle hugs.

There is also a disease called Cat Scratch Fever that can be quit serious. You definitely need to get with you rheumatologist. This is not something to mess around with.

Hello Susan,

First of all searching in rain my friend as made you feel alot worse and there's nothing worse than a chill put into the body it kicks your joints off aching besides swelling.

Keep a regular check on your scratches because of infection and watch having to many antibiotic's as they lower the immune system even more..taking probiotic's with them will help your system while on them and i would actually re-see your doctor about a "Tetanus shot"...i have one myself every 10yrs for these reasons besides seizures cutting me.

Susan you'll find the link below very helpful as it's called "Cat Scratch disease and what it cause Lupus suffers"....besides mentioning some of your symptoms your feeling.

Yes - being out in the cold rain for two hours and struggling the whole time exhausted me and caused every bit of my body to hurt. The antibiotics seem to be working..the scratches and bite are not swollen or red and hurt less every day. I did have a tetanus shot last year, so am good on that. Being in MN (snowing here today) and being bit by my house cat who has no exposure to fleas, I think I am safe from the cat scratch fever, but I did read the article and know what the symptoms are and will watch my hand closely. Thanks so much for the information and caring! Susan

I do not have a colon - have two inches left that was made into the stoma for the colostomy, The doc was also concerned about whether the antibiotics would be absorbed correctly. I guess if I get better, then they worked? Or would I have gotten better on my own? I don't know. And, yes, yogurt, rice and applesauce are some of my favorite foods! Thanks for caring!

Hi Susan,

I thought the cold weather would do you straight away and i am pleased the antibiotic's besides the scratches are'nt to bad...years back i used to heal well of scratches and scars but not now they do take longer and my seizures kicking off more i've got to be more careful.

I am pleased you add a Tetanus so your well covered and with your cat being clean helps in a large way...well i am pleased the links helped and i hope you recover fully.

Sorry you've got snow your end...we had it here last week and our temps keep dropping below -0 but they did say tonight that sunday it will be 20. lol this i have to see.

Do takecare Terri :)
