All About Talencia!

Hi guys! I'm very happy to meet each and every one of you! Let me tell you a bit about me.

I am (currently) 39, looking forward to becoming the big four-oh this year. I am married to a wonderful husband and am mother to one very loving and independent teenage son. I was diagnosed in March of 2014, so I'm coming up on my one year mark. That is not to say that my diagnosis was the start of my journey, however. That took a good long while, and can be read about right here.

Besides wife and mother, there are many descriptions that could apply to who I am. Artist, for example. I enjoy drawing with pencils, often either dragons, horses, other fantasy-type creatures, or something that's full of random shapes and textures that I have yet to discover a name for. Right now I'm delighting in my Prismacolors and discovering my own way of portraying landscapes. Such fun!

I also am a writer. I currently have three, yes three, blogs I write for. Each has a distinction from the others, and they don't mix entirely well, thus why they are each their own distinct blog. My Lupus blog, Lupus Rhythms, is where I write about my struggles, experiences, and triumphs concerning Lupus. Each post is linked to a specific song that suits the post or that I played while writing that post. I also have a creative writing blog named Whimsical Tidbits where I can post bits of poetry and story that really exist only to express me and be shared with others.

You could also call me a gamer! I actively play games such as World of Warcraft, Skyrim, and Sims 3. I've had other games I've loved in the past, like Myst (all those that are of that world) and Need For Speed: Underground 2. My hand-eye coordination isn't very good, so I tend to be bad at games that require them. I prefer games with good storylines, and/or games with puzzles in them. (If you play any of these games, I'd love to talk with you about them sometime!)

I am also a most avid reader. I like fantasy books best, and rather wish they were categorized separately from science fiction. There are a few strains of books that cross the lines between the two genres, but in general the two have very little in common! Some favorite authors of mine are Tolkien, Mercedes Lackey, Jennifer Roberson, Kristen Britain, Mickey Zucker Reichert, and Jim Butcher. I also like light mystery, and am a big fan of Dick Francis and Lilian Jackson Braun.

Let's see, what else? Ah, the more mundane things! I live in Las Vegas (yes there is more than just the Strip there, no I don't go there if I can help it) even though I dislike the desert. Too dry, too hot, and too much city! The yearly monsoon storms that roll through also do a number on my joints. That being said, though, we've lived here for nearly twelve years now, and it has become my home. I was mostly raised in California, spoiled for all the wonderful places to visit within easy driving distance. I really miss the ocean though! Hubby and I lived along the coast for several rather blissful years, and that would be my choice of where to live if I were ever given it! (Though I have no idea how coastal weather would impact my Lupus symptoms.) I also spent some of my childhood in Texas, which means that anytime I meet someone who drawls, or anytime I talk about having an accent, or am thinking/talking about country things, I start to softly drawl myself. It drives my son crazy, because he says it doesn't sound like me. He'd be positively miserable if we ever moved to Texas, as I'd IMMEDIATELY drop into the Texan accent that he doesn't think belongs to me. His discomfort amuses me.

So there you go! I think that's everything relevant that you might want to know about me. I welcome friend invites and private messages. I look forward to seeing y'all around the message boards!

Great introduction, Talencia. My mom trained herself out of her Texas accent when she was in college in CA, but the minute she gets together with the Texas relatives, back she goes right into it again. I hope you get to visit the ocean soon.

Hi Talencia

Great introduction. It is nice to know you.

Hi, Talencia, I’m Laurie. It is very nice to make your acquaintance! Thank you for your amazing introduction.

HI Talencia, that is a great introduction! I live in Northern California but not very close to the ocean - I do miss the ocean days of my youth. Happy you are here! Hugs!!

Talencia, what a great introduction! I live in San Diego and rarely see the ocean because I can't take the sun!

I do have a few friends who also live in Las Vegas and they are very happy.

Great to learn all about you, look forward to reading your blogs!

My name is Ellen and I live in Savannah, GA. I was diagnosed in 2012. I think that I had Lupus for longer than this but this is when I was diagnosed. I take Plaquinil now for almost 2 years and I am doing great. I can exercise now and life is pretty good.

My name is Catherine. I had a subjective diagnosis in 1992. I started working with UCSF the same year by donating lots of blood to different studies. I think of Lupus as an equal opportunity autoimmune disease and Lupus has been active in almost every part of my body, organs, brain, bones and ... I can trace the problems I am having back to about 5 years old.

I like you comments about how your son feels about your Texan drawl. My sons both learned early that if Mom got the least little bit of an English accent that they had better behave because I was starting to get a bit upset with their behavior.
