Vocal chord dysfunction

For so many years, my winded sensation was treated with a variety of inhalers despite me saying that it doesn't help. I fired my old pulmonologist- thank goodness. The new pulmonologist suspected vocal chord dysfunction and sent me to the top doctor for laryngeal disorders in the north east. I do have an atypical form of vocal chord dysfunction. The arytenoids fold over upon inhalation, partially obstructing the airway causing the winded sensation. The arytenoids are cartilage in the larynx. I wonder if this is related to the connective tissue disease

Hi

Sounds like you have some of the same symptoms that I have. Do you ever hiccup?? I have the hiccups at least once a day, for short time. When I cough, which I have been doing since March, I feel like something is moving. I have had inhalers, that don't help. Had pulmonary testing done and I have my first appointment on Nov 13 with a pulmonologist. What Dr in the northeast did you go to? Just in case I need one. I also have had 2 sleep studies. My last biopsy indicated MAYBE a chance of connective tissue disease. I also am hoarse at times. Interesting!!

The doctor who dx me with vocal chord dysfunction is Dr Peak Woo at Mt Sinai. He is the top ENT who specializes in the Larynx in the NE. I used an awesome pulmonologist in NJ. I am not sure where you live.

I do not know if it’s related, but I’m wondering if you have laryngomalacia? Do you have acid reflux at all? If so, you may need reflux med and may decrease some swelling, which may help a little. I’ve heard surgery can be an option (not that that is ideal, but possibly). I’m a speech therapist, not a doctor by any means, but just wanted to throw out a little help if I can.

Kelly, I am also an SLP. I have been on RX reflux meds for several years which controls the reflux very well. There is no evidence of damage from reflux. The chords are fine. When I inhale, one of the arytenoids pronate, partially occluding the airway. The other arytenoid functions correctly

Thanks Roxy:

I live in southern NH almost in MA. I haven't had my first appt with pulmon yet. I guess I can make decision after that.

I;m sure there would be a good DR in Boston if I find it necessary. How are you doing?
