Hi all...I need your input, I have SLE, Sojgrens and more I will not even go into...I am living in Las Vegas and have been feeling ok, but thinking of moving to Tampa Bay, Florida. Please if you know of the benefits of the weather on our Lupus (good or bad) please share....I know what the Sun does I live in Vegas....I wear Coolibar clothes and that seems to help and I love to swim. So if you know anything.... please I am all ears....
I also live in Vegas, but my husband travels for his work to FL on a regular basis including Tampa Bay. Although, it doesn't get as cold in FL he says it is much more humid. Therefore, if you are like me and a summer storm comes through and the humidity rises and it aches my joints, it may do the same to you. My suggestion is to take trip both during the warmer and cooler months. I made the mistake of moving from San Diego to KY without first going for a visit. What a bone-headed move.
Although I have difficulty in the heat in LV, I prefer it much more than the wet cold of KY and would never have made the move had I known the pain and torture on my body.
If you’re looking for temperate climate, the only place I could in good conscience recommend is an area of Southern CA where I grew up. Not too far south, near the coast, is the South Bay region. I wish I were still there, because I too am now in the desert (San Bernardino, inland) and it’s horrific at times. Too sunny, too dry, too hot, too much dust, too many fires, and too many allergens. When Spring hits, I flee to eastern NC for a month or two. That delays the furnace weather a bit before I have to go back. In the cities of Lomita, Torrance, Harbor City, Redondo Beach, Hermosa Beach, Manhattan Beach, Carson, Long Beach, San Pedro, (leaving out Wilmington, as it has no good areas it sucks, and Palos Verdes it’s expensive), the changes are less radical. It’s rarely in the gross humid category, and even less often in truly arid conditions. The temp swings are not wild at any time of the year. Those barometric shifts are really hard on Lupus and Fibro both. A more stable environment is what you want.
The concern I’d have about Florida is the same as I have about being in East NC fulltime… only amplified. Hurricane season could be brutal. The humidity is another factor… because in this region (I’m in NC right now), it reaches epic levels of disgusting at times. To be a little punny, you’d be jumping from the fire to the frying pan, I think. It can be very individual. Most people think humidity is bad for asthma. For me, I find the humidity here causes less aggravation than the dryness of the Inland Empire in SoCal. The suggestions to visit are right on the nose… but visit a LOT. Visit in all seasons before assuming it’s nice. I let my ex talk me into a house one time because he thought it was nice based on lovely Spring weather and retirees in the region. When summer hit I felt like I was dying… and that was the start of the worst flare I ever had. Know the whole year before making a major commitment to it. Don’t risk potentially damaging regrets.
I have lived in south Florida for most of my life! From March to September I stay in a bad way and I believe it to be the weather that causes it! As other have already stated it is not just the sun you have to worry about, but the heat and humidity is bad too! Then doing hurricane season with the storms is also bad! For the months of June and August we get bad afternoon storms because of the heat!
I wish you all the best! Just make sure you get a place with a great AC and good window treatments!
I really belong to one of the best groups ....my lupus family really comes through. Thank you so much.
I did visit Ft. Lauderdale area but I would be moving to Tampa, when I came home my eyes went crazy. I guess since I have Sojgrens they really enjoyed that water....now back in Vegas...oh I am suffering. My joints are also in pain ....maybe coming from state to state I don't know ...but it took it's toll.
I just really thank everyone for there comments....now I have to do some thinking...lol
