Skin issues

Has anyone had any issues with acne on the face and scalp? I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia and SLE within the last 5 months. I'm 44 and I break out more now than in my teens! I already take vitamin a and biotin and nothing is helping. I even use a Claris on it cleaner on my face twice a day, this is ridiculous! It just keeps getting worse and I sick of it!

Its probably just the lupus. I certainly don't know anything, but do you think it could be your age?? Go to a dermatologist. I have rash almost all the time, but that is the least of my problems.Hope you get an answer.

Take care

Cindy

My heart goes out to you as I know exactly what your dealing with!! As I am presenting the same. My “acne” seems to localize on my chin area. Than I have patches of this “acne” on the nape of my neck. I have been prescribed a topical cream for it by my dermatologist and I am also currently taking Plaqunil. None of which seems to solve the issue. Never mind the lesions that attack my extremities and back side!! That’s a whole other battle. I for one find these to not only be unsightly but painful! I like you continue to try/search for a remedy. This is just one aspect of the Lupus I deal with. Though it may be a trivial part of this disease to some, to me and I’m sure you also, it’s like the ‘icing on the cake’. Enough already! Hopefully someone who’s dealt with this very situation and have found a solution that works for them will graciously pass it on. I wish you luck in your search for an answer.

A couple of things..cleanse with goats milk soap and oats...you can probably find this at a market. Or have a goat soap maker to make you some. Also a little vita e...just bare minimal though..I know it feels like you stand out, but you really don't. The itching needs to get under control as scratching can cause infection. A dermy is probably some great advice. Good luck with that

My issues are small thank the Lord.

I am your age with SLE w/ kidney and Thyroid involvement. I have the same problem and I will list what I notice affects it good or bad. I notice, for me, it increases 10 fold during the Wintertime. Staying hydrated and away from gluten and animal products helps decrease it for me. Makes sure to address any vitamin and nutritional needs. I am anemic, very low in D and B’s. The itching can be so irritating. I went to a Rheumy once and during the visit I mentioned that and the butterfly Lupus flares. He suggested to help the itch, to try the standard dandruff shampoo (head and shoulders)with no additional ingredients on my face at night and wash it off in the morning. Mixed reviews on that for me…helped with itch onlt when i had it on. On my own I did an elimination diet and for me I think it’s food allergy related mainly with a side of stress and airborne pollutants trapped in home during winter.

Thanks for the suggestions. I take Vit A, B12, and Biotin hoping that it helps. I have oily skin normally so this just adds to it!

My acne is in the same place. This just drives me nuts! I already take 12 different vitamins a day and nothing is helping!

I have gone to a dermatologist and he put me on Accutane, which made my fibro worse. I cleanse my face every morning and night and in-between on the weekends! I was on antibiotics for two years with no relief either! UGH!!!!

sounds like you need a trip to the dermatologist, to treat the rash that could be discoid lupus. I've had this mess on the bridge of my nose and across both cheeks for a very long time, I've also lost most of the hair on top of my head because of discoid lupus, lesions have left scars pretty much all over. If the accutane isn't working go back to the derm, the ones on my face quiet down for awhile then come back, I've learned that the sores are a great barometer to measure disease activity, kenalog injections seem to quiet it down but nothing I've been on has ever cleared them up completely. good luck to you

Before I was diagnosed with lupus sle, i was seeing dermatologists for cystic acne mainly on my chin. I have never had a clear face and I am 51. These cysts would stay under the skin and grow until they surfaced. Very painful, but none of the dermatologists could find anything that worked. But, after being on plaquenil, I noticed a big change. I no longer get the huge cysts, just smaller ones that are more like pimples, but not quite. When my rheumy tried to lower my plaquenil dosage, they came back! So, I went right back to my normal dosage and can actually get out in public without being embarrassed. good luck to you. I know from experience how upsetting it can be. hugs!

I am 67 and never had a problem when I was a teenager, but now my forehead is a mess....and also on my scalp as well. The derm recommended washing my hair with mild shampoo, and a RX for Triamcinolone 0.1%., to be applied on the spots on my scalp. It seems to be helping, somewhat. I think all the meds that we are given have their limits. Even though I know we all wish for miracle cures!!!!

You may want to consider using you clearsonic once a day or ever just every other day until your skin calms down. It could be over-stimulating, causing further irritation. You should avoid exfoliating and aggressive products while your skin is flaring.

I never thought about that, thanks I'll try it!

That's encouraging, thanks!

Yes!! I never had acne in my life until my lupus saga began in my mid-30s. I was on Plaquenil for about 4 months with no help so my rheumy sent me to the dermatologist. My dermatologist gave me an initial Rx of antibiotic to knock out the bacteria in my system and then a night cream called Neuac Gel. that has clindamycin phosphate and benzoyl peroxide in it to keep things under control moving forward. It’s only been a few months but so far it has done wonders. Good luck

I might need to ask my doc. The dermatologist told me that they can't do anything else and because of my age, I cannot get retinol. I didn't break out when I was a teenager like this. Im so frustrated trying to cover acne at my age.

Hi, I got it quite badly after my diagnosis too. External applications did no good, then someone told me about attacking it from the inside out. She pointed out that our meds and even our lupus can slow down our liver, which is what cleans the toxins out of our system. When I went to a health food store to ask for something that helps cleanse the liver, it was a quick miracle and even my teenage girls started taking it when they had a breakout. The 2 products I loved no longer exist, but I'm sure a health food store person can lead you to a good product for the liver, to take the load of work off of it.

Oddly enough Proactiv helped me to get my skin clear and keep it that way

Ok, thanks! I'll see if I can find one in my area.

I've tried proactive in the past and it didn't work for long. I currently use Murad with my clarisonic and it's just working anymore.
