Acne

I have recently been experiencing quite a bit of acne, which I'm pretty sure is due to the prednisone. the problem i'm having is that when I pop a pimple (yes, I know I shouldn't, I can't help it) they are not healing. normally I just wash my face well, pop a few, put some teatree oil on them and they're relatively gone by morning. Now, I just have open wounds on my face that take forever to heal. Is this also from the meds? Is it the lupus?

I know I need to stop popping, but any other advice? I had one warrior suggest ProActiv but it's expensive and my normal face wash just isn't cutting it anymore.

Hello disarraycarr,

This link will help you regarding your acne, as there's different issues on there linked to lupus which can cause it besides meds, also allergies can cause acne and i used to have spots breaking out on my forehead besides around by my chin and the plaquenil once it had kicked in soon removed it and try not to wear any makeup as you'll make it alot worse.

Hey sweetie! I too have had this problem. I have had cystic acne for years and I am in my late 40's! When one would come up, even if a dermatologist drained it, it would not heal and would actually become a larger open sore. I think I may have been exhibiting signs of lupus then, but I wasn't diagnosed until this past March. It appears the plaquenil and low dose prednisone have helped reduce the cystic part, but if I get any open places, they refuse to heal for the longest time. I have had some luck with a topical steroid on any spots as soon as I notice them. If you must pop any, which I do at times as well, use rubbing alcohol on the pin and on your skin before and after popping and don't squeeze much. Always poke it open with the clean pin BEFORE squeezing. That keeps the irritation down. Good luck sweetie!

Yes as it turns out a rheumatologist at Georgetown hospital in Washington D.C. Just completed a study on lupus and the effects of healing. The reason I found this info was because I noticed that even something as minor as a mosquito bite was taking 2-3 times as long to heal. I have found (because yes I am a pimple popper too  ) that continuing to apply neosporin on the open area does speed up the healing process. It’s crazy I know!!! But I seriously had a bug bite that seemed like it took months to heal and according to the study I read that is exactly what they found so I am just assuming the same would apply to acne. Try the neosporin it is an affordable OTC that is worth the shot. I know it sucks because it is yet just another aspect of our lives turned upside down!!! Good luck!!! Hope this helps

Hiya, i have been on cellcept and prednisolone since may and have the exact same problem. I always got the odd spot which would heal quickly but now i am left with scars and dry spots all over my face. I went to my gp 2 weeks ago and she gave me some solution which has helped prevention somewhat. I also have been using bio oil and just keep putting dry skin lotion on regular in the hope they will heal quicker but i would say the meds are making them worse and slowing the healing process. I will be going back to my g.p if it carries on as its bad enough being unwell without looking terrible too. Good luck and hope u see an improvement :)

Hey Deenie

If the Proactiv is too expensive try the new face line SImple @ walmart it takes a little longer to work but you will still get clear skin eventually. And its the prenisone, cause the acne then slows down your healing time since it is suppressing your immune system . Hope that helps. XXOO julie

Wow, all these descriptions of acne and healing sound exactly like what I experience since the beginning of more active lupus a few years ago. Had remarkably clear and smooth skin through my teens and till age 22, but was also on birth control pills up till about then and noticed the increase a few months after I switched to the Mirena IUD (progesterone-secreting), which does tend to allow or cause more acne in a lot of people, plus taking away the suppression from bcp’s, so I didn’t think much of it… Since I hear high estrogen can really activate lupus (my 7 years continuously on bcp’s probably didn’t help me out with developing it!) and I think I’ve heard progesterone is maybe helpful, it seems like the IUD is the righ choice for now (plus it helps more with my endometriosis-like symptoms more than the bcp’s did… The reason I started those at 15 and the reason for switching at 21!)

Still, the slow-healing crusted sores, the deep, painful, cystic lumps always concentrated around my mouth and chin, and the way it would come and go in waves on on side or the other (sometimes both) seemed odd for simply hormone-induced acne! I have the same issues of scarring (purplish flat discoloration, different from the typical poc-marks of serious teen acne) and dry patches where the acne is resolving (wich is why I can’t really use acne medications or tea tree… Makes the dryness worse and slows healing!) I’ll start trying Neosporin, great suggestion! I’ve tried vitamin E (by popping the capsules) and Argan oil (a plant source of high vitamin E, with some amount of success (adding oil to acne seems crazy, but clearly this is NOT normal acne!) I use a face wash with salycilic acid and antioxidants free of chemical irritants (MyChelle Dermaceuricals brand White Cranberry Cleanser, not as expensive as cosmetics brands but definitely more than drugstore-shelf products… It’s a natural/cruelty-free type of product and runs in that price range, about $13 for a very concentrated 4.4oz that lasts a long time, smells great! I normally see it at natural foods grocery stores or Pharmaca Integrative Pharmacy, which has web ordering if not in your town!) I use Aveda brand All-Sensitive Moisturizer (very expensive, but worth it for this product! Great moisture for dry & sensitive skin, non-clogging but does have natural oils in it… Not great for oily skin or hotter climates.) I found the BEST sunscreen at a small natural store, and now that I’m running out I’m looking for a cheaper place to buy more… DaVita brand Solar Protective Moisturizer SPF 30. Like some other newer, expensive natural sunscreens (it was a pretty penny, $25 for 2.5oz that has lasted me 6 months), it has only mineral broad-spectrum Zinc oxide but in micro-particles so it’s 100% clear and smooth. It’s stand-out difference is that it’s aloe based, so it absorbs super-fast and is very moisturizing but non-greasy and non-acne aggravating! SO worth skipping a few meals out or what have you, since it protects me from flares without further ruining my skin. (Plus I can’t really eat out anyway because my GI tract is so intolerant to so many common ingredients that I have to prepare almost anything I eat from scratch or buy finished products from specialty natural stores…)

In general I find it extremely important to keep chemical irritants (SLS is a big one) off of my skin and out of my mouth/GI tract, sticking with natural & organic products & foods as much as possible, which is nearly all the time. I am guaranteed to get mouth ulcers the moment I use toothpaste with SLS (a detergent, there are milder ones from coconut oils in most products I buy… I can post more on toothpaste in a separate thread, since my mouth/throat ulcers are driving me nuts the last month and a half! In the same group eruptions on alternating sides pattern as my acne normally shows up…) The main offenders of my non-toxics policy are my prescription/OTC pharmaceutical meds (7 of them these days, 8 when go on steroids!) and I really pay a price in my sensitive GI for taking them. I wish there were a way to get the much-needed drugs in without upsetting our delicate systems even further… My acne is I’m sure in part a side-effect!

Unfortunately for us all, the natural movement is anti-drugs and the pharma industry is anti-natural! This battle of health approaches really orphans anyone chronically ill, who need to maintain a natural balance while also needing rescue with the big guns of western drugs and procedures. Hoping for progress on that front, and at least here on the West Coast I see a few efforts in it, but still feel really caught in the middle. Natural health advocates are really harshly critical out here of western medicine, so it’s hard to get anywhere… I almost wonder if it will work better in places where natural-approaches awareness trickles in more slowly  Pharmaca is one major chain operation pushing for it, excited to see where that goes, and thankful for their skincare options also! Now I just need a doc who knows about both… Someday soon, since they are now offering at least electives about “alternative health” in some of the best medical schools. those students will be in practice within the next 5 years or so! In the mean time we can keep helping each other with our own creative personal solutions

None of my "spots" heal very fast now that I'm immunosuppressed. Any type of scrape or injury takes forever to clear up and I have to watch for infection.

Please try not to squeeze the pimples....I know it is hard not to, but the chance of infection is so much greater now.

I used to get the occasional pimple when I wore makeup, but now that I have the chronic butterfly rash I no longer wear any kind of makeup on my face and haven't had any acne at all. Except for the malar rash, my facial skin has cleared up.

Praying for you!

Lori

Well i'm going to be honest here and i know i'll get some telling off as i did'nt state it above.

When i get spots now as it's not to often with the plaquenil...the yellow heads drive me mad seeing them so i sterilize a needle break them and let the yellow come out and i dab neat TCP on them it burns but within 2 days they're cleared up.

I've seen so much of it on my face over the years it gets you down...so i totally understand how we all feel about it.

I know what you mean Terri! There was a small spot on my face and I scratched it....now there's a red scab that is taking a while to go away. I can't stand the spots when they show up, either.

HUGS,

Lori

Hello Lori,

I'm excepting someone to say you should'nt be doing that but once i've broken it open and apply the TCP 3 times daily it just give the scab much time to try and set.

Lori half the time mate the scabs look worser than the actual spot..the spots are all down to our immune system being low...i wash my face in cold water and use no soap anymore it was weird at first but ste said your holding soap on your paws and since i stopped it, i don't get many appear plus the plaquenils helping besides.

Hugs to you Lori xxx

Hello Ann,

Alot of old stuff from years back besides stuff that helped with old remedies have been knocked on the head...christ knows why though.

Back in the 1960s, when I was first diagnosed with lupus pHisoHex was an antibacterial cleaner that was sold over the counter. It was the only thing that kept the various rashes with which I was plagued from being constantly infected. They no longer sell the antibacterial medication over the counter, but it can be had as a prescription. A good dermatologist can be helpful.

We used to get something in Junior High School that helped with our breakouts....I can't remember the name of it now, but it worked like magic back then.

Lori,

Put your thinking cap on mate and besides that hows your health keeping anyway? xxx

I see no reason why we cannot pop our own pimples, as long as we take necessary sterile precautions. When I see a dermatologist, she will pop and squeeze harder than I do! My cysts are painful and huge when I get one. If I don't release the pressure in them, they last months longer. I feel like people that only get a bump or two every now and then do not really understand the mental and physical affects of cystic acne or more than a "breakout". Lupus only makes it harder.

Hello artchick,

Your right with your comment...i don't have Acne but do suffer with the odd spots and boils down below when i'm really low and they can be sore...so i remove them.

There's such alot we have to suffer and like you say as long as we remove them and becareful of causing no infection i can't see the harm either in it.

Hello Ann,

Well how that drugs been made on prescription only...here in the UK alot of other stuff's been done that way also but if it's a risk to children well it's best done like that besides adults being careful if they also have children and are using it. :)

So glad to see this discussion. I never had acne when I was younger but got it when I was pregnant (which is also when Lupus reared its ugly head). The pimples are not the biggest… It’s the spots, dry patches, sores and scars it leaves behind. I can’t not wear make up and still face the world so I’m trying the generic proactiv from Walmart and it is helping. The same dermatologist who diagnosed me with Lupus prescribed an oral antibiotic to treat the acne. Upon researching it, I found that it was a drug that has been known to induce Lupus! Way to go doc! So I never tried it and I have been trying to stop “messing” with my face and that seems to help too.
