Share What Works For You

This question has been around for a while. Early humans were said to resort to ‘healing’ when sick, which includes the use of herbs, earth and other elements along with rituals. Then the Romans introduced ‘medicine’ as we know it, or today’s conventional pharmacology (also called traditional medicine). Modalities in the East like acupuncture, reflexology and other non-conventional medications and supplementations, brought complementary alternative medicine to our attention, especially to address illnesses that conventional medicine has so far no answers for, like rare and orphan diseases. Today’s buzz in the medical community is a patient-centric practice called integrative medicine where a team discusses with a patient not only healing and medication but also lifestyle changes, attitude and even spirituality that seem to work from the patient’s experience and point of view.

The last thing we want to hear from a caregiver is that there is no cure for our rare condition or that it will take a while for scientists to come up with solutions. I know there are a lot out there who are willing to try anything within reason to find effective relief, even treatment.

Some people put their faith in pharmaceuticals because they're better researched, while others are more comfortable sticking to natural treatments like supplements, even types of food like dark chocolate (for pain). Some take a combination of drugs and supplements (along with other treatments) to get significant relief.

How about you? What medications and supplements – even therapies – have worked for you? Which ones have you abandoned?

Love you discussion Armando, and it is opening up new pathways and ideas here that do need to be addressed and discussed. Thank you. My husband Jon and i are very open minded to both alternative therapies and pharmaceutical medicines. Also the spiritual aspect of health and wellbeing are important. We believe that well being is a holistic approach and we need to look at every facet of our being physically, spiritually and emotionally to be able to live a full life to the best of our ability. For Jon he is using perhaps more medication than he would like but he also tries to keep his peace of mind intact by his own spiritual beliefs.....

More and more we are thinking of the medicines working alongside and in unison with good excercise, food, and mental health. Dont get me wrong there are still bad days but the more knowledge we gain from getting to know the signs and symptoms of his disease and the warning of oncoming bad days the easier it is to cope....... again thank you for opening up this discussion, together as a group we just get stronger... kind regards Jude

Hello Armando,

Good thread...concerning myself since takin ill, it's been mainly medications given to me from either Dr's or specialist's......i used to have body massages which helped a great deal regarding taking stress away besides relaxing my muscles, until one day i had a seizure at the doctor's and it was stopped by him.

I've been to herb shops in the past but not been administered any due to counter reaction with my normal meds.

Regarding old fashioned home remedy's....when i was a child i had congestion of the lungs and salt bags was rapped around my chest and lungs which helped it...then i had pneumonia and pleurisy together and a paste was put on cloth and rapped around my body for my chest and lungs....vicks vapour rub if i get to chesty i swallow some, it can damage the lungs but according to my dad swallowed only when neccessary did no harm but it's brillaint better than any inhaler for coldness and helping you to breath and otherwise i've used friars balsam and inhaled that also plus i had my kidneys bad to the extent 14yrs ago where i was urinating blood bad....i had pure barley boiled and the juice was put into 5 large bottles and when i had it all it stopped the blood besides flushing out the kidney's and if you don't like the taste you can add abit of sugar.

Alot of home remedy's are better than what you buy over the counter in my eyes anyway....if it was used years back through generations of family's to help them cure themselves, why not carry on the tradition.

Thanks for sharing Jude. Hoping for the best for you and Jon.

Hi Armando,

I think it's good what you've brought up here and like you say other's may pick up on it...i've recommended the barley to quite a few member's already with kidney trouble but i wished i could think of the paste mixture, it's several things put together heated up really hot and pasted on bandage and the bandage is rapped around the chest as tight as possible but it does cure pneumonia...if the name comes to me i'll add it.lol

great topic!

for me, creative energy has been very helpful in managing this disease---if I take a good dose of creativity elixir at least once per day I feel better and feel more and more like this illness is serving a purpose. This is the factor- that I appreciate so much in a website like this one---it helps me make sense (uses all my senses to process) and if our suffering has , meaning then it is a blessing and there fore easier to bear

Janice they reckon that good creativity is a good issue for many things and i think the site helps we all in so many issues.

i like the barely idea...i will try it

Hi Janice,

It cured me urinating blood because my kidney's was bad and it's pure barley you boil till it's cooked then drain the juice into bottles and once cool but the bottles in the fridge and if you don't like the taste add abit of sugar but those 5 bottles soon cured me...that's an old remedy.

I like that! I am quite an artist myself. I used to paint to relieve stress but work has clawed into quality, creative time. I need to make a mental note on that. Got to find my old painting kit...
