Narcotic Pain Meds and Itching

Yesterday I started itching. I could not figure out why. I thought maybe it was the result of sun exposure, even though I have been very careful. Today, I figured it out - HYDROCODONE. I recently experienced a striking increase in pain and resumed taking these pain relievers.

Any opiate based pain med can release histamines that cause itching, hives, and other types of rashes.

I experienced a horrible itchy nose while on it in the hospital. i never knew something could itch so much!!!!

I take tramadol & have to take a anti histamine be side it causes me to itch like mad!! It’s very annoying but the anti histamine works well.

I was very itchy at first, but now I believe my body has adjusted and I no longer itch when I take it, but it does significantly help me with pain and I don't suffer from nausea with it. Maybe you might need to try something else? Not sure what as I'm not expert, but maybe someone else on here does. Hope you feel better.

I have been itching like crazy for a little over a month, just about the time I started Rituxan. Not sure if it started after or just before. At the same time is when the heat wave started here. I have been taking Claritin and Benadryl and doubled my prednisone and nothing. I itch but mainly as the son goes down the itch gets a million times worse. At around 8/9 pm I get almost nauseated from the itch. Taking a shower a colder than notmal shower seems to helps but I have bruises and scratch marks all over from this. There is no rash and it feels like a sting strikes and when I go to scratch I cannot stop because it doesn’t get rid of the itch. It is a bit better now but it is driving me insane! I am told it can be nerves and not necessarily skin related. I hope it goes away soon!

I am sorry you having increased pain itching is a terrible side affect unfortunately it is a comon one with pain meds.

Wow every now.and again i.experience the intense itching without any of my rashes or sun exposure, never been able to relate it to anything. I have been on and off the painmeds for
years and now it makes sense. See…after over 20 years of autoimmune complications.and i am still learning. You all are awesome! i hope your pain has lessened and you are feeling better. --Mare

I ITCH WHEN I TAKE MY DILLUDID. SO I JUST TAKE IT WITH BENEDRYL. PROBLEM SOLVED.

I’m so glad I found this post. I itch uncontrollably every night. I have scratch marks and bruises from itching so much. I have used so many different lotions to moisturize my skin. I have to take Benadryl every night and rub anti itch cream on my arms legs hands and feet. It doesn’t matter if its summer or winter. I don’t take my pain killers every night but do take a lot of pills. I don’t know how to go about figuring out which pill may be causing it.
