My kidney doctor has been lower my dosage of predisone(steriods)it effects your bones make them ache and effects your kidney, she has dropped me down from 20 miligram to 10 miligram to five miligram, I normally take four a day, Has anyone encountered this because it was also was to be for pain?
Hello Lia,
I was in the day unit for my kidneys being bad and swollen besides my joints and they offered me prednisone to help take the swelling down but i refused it being a steriod...i don't know about making the kidneys bad because they wanted me on it to help my kidneys and you shouldbe on a tablet to stop prednisone affecting your bones and making them brittle.
Here's a link on prednisone for you to read http://drugs.emedtv.com/prednisone/prednisone-warnings-and-precautions.html

A lot of times when tapering off prednisone you go through a period of 'flaring' hopefully you will get back on an even keel soon
thank you for the respond and I to hope it works out,I am still off of work and at times stress about going back to work but I can only take one day at a time. Trying and having to take all these different meds is challenaging stoping one having to take another one for whatever reason .My best wishes.
thanks for the impot, appreciate you.
Hello Lia,
Your welcome and the meds can be testing at times especially when we want relief.

The predisone is not a pain medication. It can help with the pain because it reducess inflamation wich causes pain... I would love to be able to get of this damn drug but I simply cant. My lupus is to active at the moment to do that.... grrrr
Hi sunshinespraypaint,
Your correct about prednisone it's not a pain medication only for taking down swelling and easying it for you...when i was admitted into the day unit, there was 5 women connceted to drips being fed from the bags and one woman got chatting and said she started on them at 7am and never finished till 6pm having 5 bags of it...so i know how you feel about wanting to come off the drug...it's just so terrible at times for we all.

Hi Lia,
What you're experiencing is common. Prednisone is the standard med of choice for keeping your immune system "quiet". If your physician sees you during a flare or your disease is quite active, expect to be on higher dosages such as 20 or more mg/day. I have been as high as 60 mg/day to my current low of 7.5. (I also take another immunosuppressant CellCept as I have severe kidney issues). The side effects of prednisone can be pretty gnarly but usually they effect those who have been on high dosages for years. Regardless, the only optimum dosage is zero.
Good luck with your progress.
