I recently had a nice chat with one of my brothers, who has an autoimmune disorder, diagnosed age 28, but his doctor suspects he had it since later childhood. And unfortunately, his teenage son has it too.
One thing he told me about was to begin working on my diet, my needs being different than his, he did say inflammation can be triggered by contact with anything in the nightshade family. "Do your research, Sis."
So I have been trying to learn more. I long ago gave up all white potatoes as they run my blood sugar into coma zone, and I feel like the pits. Yes, they are nightshades. There are many more, common in a typical American diet. I hope no one minds, but I am going to post a link to an article that lists them. Yes, the author has valid credentials, and lists her resources at the bottom. So if this is a no- no and the link gets removed, I apologize, and anyone wanting it feel free to message me.
Ballerina, glad it was helpful. I learned a lot! I had no idea potato starch was used as filler or binder in medicines. I had heard about wheat being used for this long ago, also in many vitamins and supplements.
Great article. I couldn’t help but click on more links at the end of the article. I couldn’t stop reading! Oh, but I love tomatoes and always say, “A sandwich isn’t a sandwich without tomatoes”. I guess that would include tomato sauce, too?
Like a lot of things, this is very individual. I hear people all the time say that lupies should all avoid all nightshades. I also know a lot of lupies that have no problems with them. Not a single one bothers me with one exception that isn’t because of its plant genus. Tomatoes are acidic, and when canned in metal they leech BPA from the anti-rust coating. That causes inflammatory pain for a lot of people, myself included. I can only eat fresh tomatoes, or those in carton, or glass containers.
Everyone should tailor the list to your own needs. I am chronically low in potassium but several of these are high sources of calcium. It’s all about making it work for you!
