Horrible nausea

does anyone else get really bad nausea where they have to take antiemetics just to function and be able to eat properly?? i have these bad episodes of nausea where i feel like im going to throw up at any minute and i get the shakes and my heart beats faster... is there anything else apart from the antiemetics that will help me?? i normally get it atleast once a day :( :( i feel like i cant go out or do anything because im scared its going to happen. i dont know if its the meds or not but it used to happen even before i was diagnosed... could it be that the lupus is affecting my stomach and bowels??

Hi Cayleigh,

Nausea can come from many issues from Lupus, medication and IBS and other bowel trouble you need to see a gastro regarding this issue as so many of we have IBS besides coeliac Disease.

This recent discussion on nausea may help you plus what members use to help it.

Thanks so much for replying   I’ve already seen a gastro and he did say I have very irritable bowels… I diddnt know that it could be a part of lupus… Thanks for the info I will have a good read through and hope I find it helpful.

cayleigh did he say if you have IBS because certain foods can irritate it and regarding anything that can come on naturally, Lupus can cause besides.

Your welcome and i hope the info helps :)

Yeah I’ve definately got IBS certain things like eggs and onions irritate it but I’m not too sure what else

Yes I have the same problem I will just be sitting and out of nowehere a nausea feeling comes over me. Sometimes I think it has to do with something I ate after taking my meds but not sure. I usually drink water and it leaves after that.

The medications can make you nauseous. I know Methotrexate does this to me. Just right now I feel your angy because I am having horrible nausea day. have taken Compazine but no relief,. There is an over the counter chewable tablet called "Nauzine" that has helped when the nausea is not to bad. Try SPrite and crackers when you feel like this. It could also be from low blood sugar. I usually have to go and lay back down on my bed. Let your MD know and maybe he can find one of your meds causing this symptom. See if the MD has any suggestions.

Sprite and crackers help me when the med does not. Also keep hydratred.

Hope this helps

So sorry you have this too. My mother, brother and I all have lupus and we all have chronic nausea. WE eat so little. but drink Ensure. The nausea is so bad, it's disabling. We barely can move when it gets really bad.

I used to get nausea much more often before I started watching my gluten intake. I know it may sound like a fad, but it really has helped. I still do get nauseaus, about once a week, but not daily like I used to.

I try to drink electrolyte water and low-calorie Gatorade drinks so that I replace some of the vitamins that aren't being absorbed by my body. Like you, I suffer from severe anemia, low B-12, calcium, etc because my kidneys don't function properly which is where the nutrients are absorbed into the body.

When the nausea is really bad it can be an indication of kidney issues. Sublingual B-12 is easy to get and pretty inexpensive and can help.

So, yes certain side effects of lupus can be affecting your digestive system and as well as the organs that regulate your digestion and uptake of vitamins and nutrients.

Please talk to your doc about the nausea and have them check your blood for low nutrients. Protein is the building block of the body, but without the nutrients to create the protein the organs will slowly cease functioning well.

Please take care of yourself. Best of health,

DeAnne

cayleigh - you may be looking at a physical problem like IBS or low blood sugar, a medication problems and/or - I would like to throw this in the ring - anxiety attack. Anxiety can also give you the same symptoms. When you mentioned it happened daily and that you were almost afraid to leave the house, a lightbulb went off in my mind. I suffered from agoraphobia for years and years..confined to the house. I think the symptoms are almost worse than the lupus I am now suffering from. Anyway, just another idea for the pot..hope you start feeling better soon!

Hi I have SLE, Sojgrens and Connective tissue disorder. I was diagnosed a year ago with gastroparesis I am not diabetic I was sent to the Cleveland Clinic. I was told it was caused by my SLE and Sojgrens. I take Phenergan and Tigan and when I get really bad I have go the ER for IV fluids. I'm nauseated most of the time. Just another thought to throw out there.

What I do for my stomach problems / nausea is drink lemon ginger tea either alone or with some organic honey. I find that drinking it right after eating prevents any stomach problems. It helps with inflammation and air/gas in the stomach and intestines. I noticed in the link that Tez provided, someone mentioned chewing ginger gum. In my case, chewing gum makes things worse because it causes me to swallow more air which adds to the problem. Ginger is good, swallowing air from chewing gum is bad. I also can’t drink pop because it has air bubbles (carbonated) which gets trapped in my stomach causing me to feel very nauseous and it feels like my stomach gets inflamed. Of course you can drink the pop “flat” by getting rid of the bubbles and if you’re going to do that I’d recommend ginger ale. I don’t like pop, though so I stick with herbal teas. You can also try spearmint tea or chamomile tea. They are also supposed to be good for nausea. I also avoid or limit foods that I know will cause stomach problems like inflammation and trapped air which causes nausea in my case. My triggers are grains and many types of vegetables and fruits. I stick with foods that won’t cause problems for me.

Plaquenil also caused nausea for me at first.

It also kind of sounds like my sister's panic attack.....who would literally vomit...she also had body image issues. So only you know if this might pertain to you.

I myself with SLE do have nausea and bowel issues...like my bowels work twice as fast as most people and my pain medication actually has slowed down to more normal...but at times like you i hate to go out in public ..need bathroom at any time.

I also had similar issues when i had kidney issues ...just got sick over smells or had to to bathroom and could not hold it..part was drugs they were giving me but part was just me and what was going on...so could be a whole lot of things like many of us are pointing out.

I have to take really strong stomach calming meds now too....but i do part of my is caused by stress , part is due to physical issues. sorry you are suffering through this...i know how it feels to be afraid to go out in public just do not know what may happen.

Hi cayleigh,

Onions like yourself, peppers and any hot spicy foods kick mine off, you need to study the food your eating and watch for when your stomach kicks off as this will help you in a large way...i'm on spasm tablets daily and also lactulose as my bowels go stubborn alot.... as spasm tablets do help also if you not on any :)

Thanks for all your tips and things I’m sure ill find what works for me sooner or later   one more question though is I’ve been on plaquenil for just over a week and I have no appetite and it’s a daily struggle to eat even a little bit I was wondering wether this side effect would eventually go as my body gets used to it??

Hi cayleigh,

Nausea alone which makes we feel sick and inwardly upset in our systems can sometimes automatically put we off food but you should respond better where foods concerned once the nausea as settled itself.

Plaquenil does cause weight loss as it does it with me besides throwing you off eating...it's the side affects of the drugs and mastering them :) xxx

Plaquenil (400 mg.) caused me to lose my appetite, too. I would eat only 1 meal a day and snack on something light like crackers throughout the rest of the day. I didn’t want to walk around all day with an empty stomach (acid) and I also didn’t want to become weak from not eating anything. I’m now taking only 200 mg. and have a regular appetite again.

I have that problem also, but ran into an er nurse whom happened to be a fellow lupie and her rheumy has her use apple cider vinegar. Mix 1/3 apple cider vinegar and 2/3 water in like a shot glass size and drik start out once a day but if you do it before each meal it helps a lot. Helps with acid reflux, and naturally helps flush out your liver. It is very good for you.

Oh and I almost forgot tll the vinegar started getting my system normal or I was just having the bouts of nausea rheumy told me to do ensure or boost with crackers. Cause if I’m gonna be throwing up at least liquid digests faster and my body can get a chance to get some of the nutrition it needed.
