Flare up while on Plaquenil and Imuran

Have been on Plaquenil 400mg daily x2 yrs, and Imuran 50mg daily x9months, new flareup began last week, tremendous brain fog, pain, confusion, depression. Any one else still get flare ups while on meds?

James,

I understand what you are going through. I started a fare up this morning including, achy and sore joints, depression and I feel like I keep brain fog. I also take Plaquenil 400 mg daily but no Imuran. For me it just comes and goes, I don't feel like I am ever in remission, because it seems every few days to a week something else flares. Sometimes, I think I should stop taking it and then I remember how much worse it was before I was taking them. Hope you get well soon.

Tami

Thank you, it was much worse prior to medications. The fog was always present (not quite sure if it ever leaves) the pain was much worse, especially the pleural and pericardial pain.

Absolutely you can flare while being actively treated Plaquenil often does not prevent flares - it just makes them less severe. Often the doc will temporarily up your meds to get the flare under control

I do....on a bunch of various meds but I still have trouble with pain and anemia

Hello James,

Flare ups still happen while taken meds...the meds help to suppress the immune system and cause these less issues with us but it's also getting people on the right drugs and amounts which is the major case of controlling Lupus best possible.

Foggyness is always a main issue for a large majority of us, the pure loss of concentration is so annoying and doing stuff you was'nt going to do....pleural and pericardial pain you must becareful with...did you see someone about it?...to make sure you was totally ok.

Hi James,
I’m in a flair and I’m on Arava, prednisone, Plaquenil and Benlysta. I usually flair when I’ve let myself get rundown, stressed or sometimes I just flair for no reason. The Rheumatologist will usually just up your prednisone if your on it or if your not they will add it to your meds. Make sure you let your doctor know what is going on! Lupus can be tricky! What we think is a flair might be something else or it might be a horrible flair that needs treatment.
