I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia 2 years ago. My sister was diagnosed with fibromyalgia 1 year ago. Yesterday she called and told me the doctor miss diagnosed her and she definitely has lupus. Said the doctor told her it was 97% genetic. My doctor ran a lupus blood test on me and it was negative. My question is… Could the test be wrong and I actually have lupus. Could they have miss diagnosed me as well? We don’t see the same doctor. She lives in another state. All I really know for sure is the medicine they have me on for fibromyalgia is not helping. If anything I’m getting worse.
Hey Tarra! I think anything is possible...I also think there is a lot of different ways to look at this. lol. I think it is possible to have Lupus and test negative for it. it's really tough because a lot of these illnesses have so many symptoms in common; I would talk to your doctor in general, because it sounds like your medications aren't helping to begin with. Also ask him/her to retest you. Or seek a second opinion. Also, it is common to have other illnesses coinciding with Lupus, so there is a possibility of having both. These are just a couple of points though.
I just recently DX Lupus, but I tried to get second opionion about the medicine. another doctor send my blood to this lab http://avisetest.com/ it back different diagnosis! I am just research this new technology see how much I can reply on it.
Hello Tarra. Lynn4545 is absolutely right. You can not say for sure unless your doctor keeps you under observation and decide based on symptoms and how you are responding to meds.
Initially i was misdiagnosed as well. And though I had positive ANA my doc diagnosed me for fibromyalgia. Then I changed doc after 6months because he won’t listen to me when I say there is no improvement in pain. He thought I am just imagining things. The second reuhmatologist I saw asked for another ANA and bunch of other blood works. And this time they came negative! Yet he kept me under observation and after few months he made his diagnosis official that it indeed is lupus along with fibromyalgia. Since then my life has been easier. I have right therapy to manage my pain and issues.
I would suggest you to take second opinion and don’t rely entirely on blood works. Hope you get better soon. Stay strong.
I was tested for Lupus and it came back negative twice. The third time it was positive. Luckily I have a Rheumy that was sure I had it even though I had tested negative. Keep pushing!
Sofia, I took the Avise blood test I hear it is the most accurate test out there. Did the ANA come back possitive? If so, did it go to the next tier of tests?

Jon, my ana still strong positive at avist test . But the sle index is -3.7 (range -5~5). So maybe I do not have sle? I do not know how much I can rely on this test .
Hi Tarra
I have both fibro and lupus. Talk with your doctor about the meds it can take awhile to find the right combination. My doctor treated me for lupus over a year before giving me the diagnoses. Also make sure your doctor knows their is a family history of lupus.
