Breathing sharp pains

Have noticed in the last few days I have been experiencing pains in the right side when I take some deep breaths not constant but irritable. Any one experienced this?

splurge? I have been fighting something off that became a lung infection and has my voice hoarse now gone. I have had this side pain happen some, and others here have advised me to get with my doctor, as those with lupus can easily develop pleurisy, a rub between the outside of your lung(s) lining and the lining for your other body tissues or something along those lines. It can also fill with fluid. Anyhow please call your doctor! I'm told this is nothing to mess around with.

hope you are feeling better soon. left sided hugs

sounds like pleurisy... if it gets too bad just go to ER, go to the doctors tomorrow if its not too bad at the moment... just make sure you get seen its important

hope you feel better soon

Hello splurge,

Please don't mess about where breathing issues are concerned and "Ohsoperplexed" and "Cayleigh" are right...it could be a possible starting for pleurisy i've had it several times besides pneumonia and many other members and pleurisy left to long the pain gets so severe you have no choice but to see someone ASAP and pleurisy is dangerous as it can cause clots to the lungs besides filling them with fluid...the link below is on the symptoms.

Also this info below may help you. Terri :)

Lung Involvement in Lupus

Although the underlying connective tissue disease is the root cause of lupus-related lung problems, the exact mechanism differs for each of the most common conditions.

The most frequent lung problem that affects people with lupus is pleuritis, also known as pleurisy. In this condition, the pleura—a membrane that covers the exterior of the lungs and the interior of the chest cavity—becomes inflamed. Although the pleura normally produces a small amount of fluid to lubricate the space between the chest wall and the lungs, that fluid can build up excessively. Pleural effusion, which occurs when the fluid between the lungs and the chest wall leaks out, can cause a lot of pain.

With lupus pneumonitis, the inflammation is within the lung tissue itself. The cause is usually an infection by bacteria, viruses, or fungi. It can also be caused by an autoimmune injury to the lung, deBoisblanc adds.

Blood clots in the lungs, known as pulmonary emboli, present another possible complication. “Lupus can cause blood clots to form and break loose and go to the lungs,” deBoisblanc explains.

Some people with lupus have a condition called antiphospholipid antibody syndrome that puts them at even higher risk of pulmonary emboli. With this disorder, the body produces antibodies against normal blood proteins, which can cause clots to form in the arteries.

Less common—except among people who have both lupus and other types of connective tissue disorders such as scleroderma—is pulmonary hypertension, or high blood pressure in the blood vessels within the lungs.

The disorder is still a bit mysterious, says Steven M. Kawut, M.D., director of the pulmonary vascular disease program at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. “We don’t know the pathophysiology,” he says. What doctors do know is that the high blood pressure in the lungs’ blood vessels strains the right side of the heart and can cause shortness of breath, swelling of the lower extremities, and, eventually, heart failure.

Other lung complications include chronic diffuse interstitial lung disease, which can scar the lung and prevent oxygen from moving easily from the lungs into the blood; pulmonary hemorrhage, or bleeding into the lungs; and “shrinking lung” syndrome, which causes a sense of breathlessness and the feeling that the lungs are not able to expand.

I also get pain on my right side. It feels like it’s coming from deep inside my right lung. It’s not a sharp pain like pleurisy. It’s a deep ache that isn’t affected by inhaling or exhaling. I’ve been getting it for about 9 months now. It only lasts a day, then it’s gone. It happens about twice a month. I haven’t gone to the doctor about it because it happens so infrequently. Sometimes I think it might be from my allergies or my spine may be out of alignment and pressing on a nerve (from mild scoliosis) which causes the pain. I’ve also thought about a blood clot, but don’t have any shortness of breath with the pain. I have had what I thought was pleurisy pain in the past. It’s a sharp pain that is worse when inhaling. It would also get worse when i moved certain ways. It’s a pain that would last all day for me. Nothing helped to make the pain go away and I would have to move as little as possible and try not to breathe deeply. I haven’t experienced that particular type of pain in a long time. I used to experience it maybe every couple of months.

Tez thanks for sharing all of that info with us. As usual it’s the best. I agree with ohsoperplexed and Cayleigh. Sounds like pleurisy. Splurge you should see your doctor and mention this to him since you said it’s been happening for the last few days.

Thanks tez, once again! My doc keeps telling me it’s a deep tissue strain, I’m done playin n I’m calling today for a cat scan. Can’t take the pain n missing out on family activities!

Hello KeepKeepinon,

I'm no doctor to diagnose as you know but Lupus can affect organs and if your not well and you have a flare occuring, it could be causes lodging pain to the lung/s....as i've add it myself besides swelling across my back but pleurisy is murder when the pain really kicks in i know that.

All my love Terri xxx

Hello Sue,

What your doctor means when he's saying (deep tissue strain) is your immune system is attacking healthy tissue in the lungs...i ah being funny but never heard nothing like it, that's happening to we all constantly internally to our bodies...oh mate get and see someone where you'll know proper what's going on.

When i was diagnosed they new by just listening to my chest but you need a scan doing because pleurisy left to long can scar the lungs as it's made my left one black.

Please update we besides Sue...hugging emoticonTerri :)

Thanks tez going for cat scan this week!

Same symptoms, plus bloody spotum, had a bronchoscopy with at least 2 bacterias in my lungs. On several antibiotics. This, while battling PE (pulmonary embolism).

Especially if you're running a high fever.

Hi Sue,

I am pleased mate and hopefully whatever is causing you pain will be diagnosed...please keep me updated and other's if you don't mind. :)
