Is it common for someone with Fybro to eventually get Lupus? I have a 19 year old niece who has had Fybro since she was 17 and everytime I go to my rheumy I hear them talk about having Fybro and Lupus so it’s common for you de get both? If anyone has both or knows about it please let me know I would really appreciate it.
I'm not sure if the two are connect or not. I was first diagnosed with Lupus then about 6 months later the Dr threw in a Fibro diagnosis as well. Although Im not receiving any other / different treatment for it.
I don't know if it's common, but both of it sucks. I was Diagnosed w/ fibromyalgia in 2001and 8 years later lupus showed itself. With fibro, my rheumy examined and pressed 14 different areas that hurt and burn like hell, and lupus he did lab work to diagnose lupus.
I have both! I really don't know very much about this - I mean how frequent this is.
I got lupus first, fibro latter. I don't know the connection between the two except to say that both can hurt a lot. Good luck to you
I was Dx with fibro first. I was told that I would most likely have lupus but didn’t test positive with my blood work at the time. Four years later I received the dx of cutaneous tumid lupus with three positive skin biopsies. Then two years later received the diagnosis of systemic lupus.
In my opinion, it is a diagnosis used way to often when they can’t find out what is really wrong, specially with younger people! However, there are many connective tissue disorders with lupus that are overlapping. There are a lot of us that have both.
But the Mystery of both still remains.
Deenie
I have both fibromyalgia and lupus. It is common for someone who has lupus to have fibromyalgia but not sure that a person with fibromyalgia would get lupus. I know that my rheumy says that most people with lupus have fibromyalgia along with it.
I have Lupus, and Fibro. I had the Lupus for about 5 years before my DX with the Fibro. When my tests all came back okay several times, but being just as sick is when the DX with Fibro kicked in. Either of them are fun.......
I was diagnosed with Fibro in 2003 and just recently diagnosed with Lupus, this past April after 3 yrs of new symptoms and lots of doctor appts. I think the statistics say something like 30% of Lupus patients also have Fibro. I was managing my fibro well with diet, exercise and supplements, but when the Lupus symptoms started everything went down hill. I do think the Lupus makes the Fibro worse. It is hard to know some days what pain is from what.
From all I've studied, the medical authorities say that although most people with Lupus also get fibro, people with fibro alone do not get lupus. Fibro isn't a disease that leads to lupus. If a person gets lupus after they got fibro, they always had lupus, not just fibro.
I was diagnosed with fibro about 20 years ago and just diagnosed with lupus a year ago although I had lots of the same symptoms for many years, rash, positive ana, stomach issues, joint pain and this goes on. Even when I told my family doctor last year that the rheumatologist said it was lupus it stunned him because of my “age”, I’m 63. That’s why I think I’ve had much longer than we thought.
I have Lupus SLE a few years later fibro showed up :( ....Not sure if they are related or not..x
Thank you so much for all of your replies I will ask my rheumatologist when I see him I really hope my niece doesn’t get LUPUS she’s so young ;( thanks again and god bless all of you.
I just want to commend you for being involved and curious about your niece’s issues. I think a lot of us have commented in other forums how some family and friends don’t get it and you are educating yourself to be a better aunt to her. THANK YOU!
I’ve had Lupus since right before I turned 16. It sucks because everything I used to do, I can’t anymore. I hate it.
Hi Mary, I have both also. I don't remember which came first as I had lupus for years before the diagnosis. Maybe the
fibro was more evident at first. I hope your niece has a mild case of fibro and no lupus. You are a great Aunt!!
That’s what they had tested my niece for first but thank God it was negative so they retested her and ended up diagnosing her with Fibro ;( both are bad but pray to god she doesn’t get LUPUS on top of it. She’s so young and in college I’m realistic to the fact that with either disease you will get more on top of it but at least for her I hope not for many years to come. Thank you all for taking your time to reply and God bless.

I’m very sorry to hear you got it so young what I admire the most about my niece is that even though she got Fibro so young she is always so positive and optimistic and doesn’t let it get her down or keep her from pursuing her dreams. To get her degree in Criminal Justice and Anthropology. I hope that things get better for you and like always will keep all of you in my prayers god bless.

My niece paints helps her relax and she told me right before she started school again this week that all she hopes for is that her fibro doesn’t keep her from being able to paint anymore
