Alternatives to Prednisone?

I have been on predisone 18mg for 14 yrs…i drink water…i dont eat milk products…white foods…i am more active…i take my meds at 1am…it helps me…i hope you find relief and comfort…

I hear you... I am on 15mg of prednisone a day and 7.5mg of methotrexate once a week. Both are hard on your system, but its the only way they have been able to get my year long flare up under control. I was once in remission for five years unfortunately I moved to a new city for work and cant see that doctor any more. Any one in Dayton Ohio his name is Sanford Wolfe. and he is amazing. the steroids do more than reduce your inflammation but that would surely help. There is several biologic s that will help to reduce inflammation and help reduce pain. I had a long run with plaquinel and it worked great until I started having vision problems. Almost 15 years. thats what dr wolfe used to get me into and keep me in remission. I hope that helped. God bless

I know prednisone hinders your ability to sleep. I trust you only take it in the morning. So sorry about the acne. That's something that never happened to me on prednisone - just the moon face and weight gain. And I did have trouble sleeping at times. I'm glad you can take plaquenil. I can't take it or Naprosyn now. I take lots of gabapentin, but I have other things going on. I do hope your doctor's visit goes well and, most of all, that you improve! Julia

Thanks Julia.
I've been on placquenil & Naprosyn for almost 25 years. For the last 8 years, that was enough to keep me quite stable. I have had to alternate a different NSAID for the Naprosyn when my body got too used to it. I was just curious what some other rheumatologists were prescribing since all the rheumys I've ever had all seem to fall back on the standard old prednisone. My current rheumy tends to be more conservative. I've been very very fortunate to have had such a long reprieve from any major flares, but like my boyfriend told me when I turned 40 last year...I was going to start falling apart now. He's 6 years older than me and was speaking from experience. LOL. Luckily he has been very supportive and keeps me laughing. Yesterday he said don't think I'm getting a Rascal Scooter before he does. Thankfully neither one of us are at that stage yet. :o)
You are correct that sleep does wonders, unfortunately the prednisone tends to hinder my ability to sleep. I have been getting in short naps whenever I can though. Have my Diflucan for the severe oral thrush the prednisone has given me, so that is improving...I've never had acne like this in my entire life though which also appears to be a prednisone side effect. My face, neck & chest are just covered with acne. I'm scrubbing my skin 3X a day and it just isn't improving. So my vanity is taking a big blow because now I look as bad as I feel :o) I refuse to be a victim of prednisone side effects if I can find an alternative. The rheumy and I will have a good discussion next week when I come in fully armed with my research. Thanks again!
Sending you all well wishes and pain free days!

I have been on and off prednisone for a year now. It is a miracle drug for me, I always dread going down on the mgs. I feel soo good the first few days and than its all down hill. I always get rashes that seem to come back with a vengeance after the prednisone dose is finished. I wish I could feel normal again. The worst thing that I experience on the prednisone is loosing my hair and getting acne. I would rather deal with that then fatigue, pain and horrible rashes. Im sorry to hear it doesn't work well for you.

Dobby: stop scrubbing. It could be Rosacea. Any type of acne can be aggravated by scrubbing, but Rosacea is especially sensitive. It’s not improving, you said… so that may well be why. Cool water, no hot. Use a gentle cleanser and pat dry gently. Two products I recommend you look for. The first is Prosacea - Walmart, Walgreen’s, CVS, Rite Aid - it’s OTC. It works wonders for a lot of people and is cheaper and safer than a Metro gel prescription… and if it isn’t Rosacea, it won’t hurt a thing. It could still help. Active ingredient being sulfur, it’s good for acne in general. If your Walmart or similar store carries products from Mexico like Broncolin, Nopales capsules, Arnica ointment… they may have a bar soap with sulfur in it. you can also go to a natural/gentle bar soap from a health food store if you have one. Kroger and Food Lion have sections with such products too. You want something without sodium laurel/laureth sulfate. Try it. You may get serious relief.

Hi Tala,

It's not Rosacea. I did give up scrubbing, because as someone pointed out it was coming from within my system, not the surface of my skin. I had avoided using makeup or moisturizers because I thought it would make it worse. I finally used my estee lauder moisturizer and it seemed to help improve the acne. (strange but true) I'm down to 10mg prednisone as of today and I'm still breaking out, but it is not as severe as it was with the 40 or 20mg dosages.

I love the great advice, support & sharing everyone offers on this site. Thanks! Hope we all have some pain free days.

:o)

I’m glad it’s improving. Moisturizer working is not at all strange. The one product like that I can trust for my face is Lanocreme from New Zealand.

Try proactiv. I know it sounds strange but it works. even on the butterfly rash. Good Luck:)
