A chemo drug gave me lupus

I need to know from someone who is knowledgeable if you get lupus from a chemo drug, and you get off the drug, would the lupus disappear?

Some Chemo drugs are used to treat Lupus. I've had two sets of infusions with drugs that usually treat cancer. The one I just came off of Rituxan will take up to six months before I will see results. There is no cure for lupus but it can go into remission months, even years following the right treatment and life style. I've had lupus for almost 20 years.

I know that some medications can give people lupus. I know someone who got it from cholesterol meds. Once they took him off it, he remained sick for quite a while, but when he got well, he’d have lupus, but it wouldn’t flare unless he went on the med again. It was a known possible side effect. Ask your doctor about it. Also, stress can give you lupus- with me, I was diagnosed with mumps that I had for 6 months. Clearly the mumps put my lupus into an active stage. So people activate lupus with a car accident, all sorts of stress situations . So chemo could do it too, I suppose. It would shock your syste

You can get lupus from medication. You need to have this discussion with you doctor.

Lupus-like syndrome can be caused by some meds. The usual treatment plan includes discontinuing the drug for a period of time until the symptoms stop, taking meds to control the lupus symptoms, and you’re original condition, but I don’t think you can ever resume that drug or even take drugs from that class again. This is all stuff that you’ll have to go over with your doc. I am so sorry that you are having to deal with this. It must be very frustrating.

This is what I can tell you. I had breast cancer last year and took my last chemo in Aug, 2013. I had an appt with my Rhumy and he said some time chemo can put you in remission! However I haven’t had bloodwork yet! I have had no flares since last year!
