A couple of days ago, I was playing with my dog and running around enough to have to breathe deeply. I felt some tightness and pain in my chest, but only for a minute. The next afternoon, I was talking to my daughter on the phone while walking around straightening up the house and suddenly I was completely out of breath and huffing and puffing like I had just sprinted up a hill. This lasted about 30 minutes and I felt a heaviness near my sternum and some pain radiating from that area.I had taken half a Tramadol (approx. 25mg) about an hour before feeling this way, so I was wondering if this was some type of lung inflammation from lupus, or possibly a reaction to Tramadol?
Sounds like it could be your heart actually because both times you were active and from what your are describing it sounds like it…Heart pains come on and off I recommend next time you get the pain and shortness of breath go to ER… If it was pleurisy it would be all the time not just on 2 occasions

Julie, you should see someone soon. If not the ER, then call your doctor. I had shortness of breath recently but was already in my doctors office for a follow up. I discussed with my doctor who sent me to a cardiologist in the same building. The cardiologist ran tests and has now scheduled me for a heart catheterization to check for blockage. The cardiologist also gave me samples of Ranexa for chest pains asked me to take a baby aspirin daily. My doctor explained that there can be many causes for shortness of breath and some more serious than others. Please take care of yourself.
Thanks so much for the concern! I have an appointment with my rheumatologist today and have notes to take in with me to talk to him about all of this. I don't know why but I only thought of lungs - not heart.

So glad you're seeing the doctor. Most cases of shortness of breath are due to heart or lungs. I knew I was anemic and thought I needed some extra a B-12 or iron. The doctor recognized other important symptoms. Good luck!
Just an update. Went to the rheumatologist today and he said it was inflammation in the lining of the heart causing my chest pain and shortness of breath. (Pericarditis- I think he called it). He said that it would probably come and go with the flares, which I've been fortunate not to have but every 3 or 4 months so far. And since my heart and lungs are healthy, he said we would monitor it but that it shouldn't cause any damage or anything.
Thanks so much for replying to my question! It just helps to know that other people have experienced these things and it's not just all in your head.
