Prednisone Taste Horrible!

I was taking 5mg once a day but my Dr just upped it to 10 mg twice a day. I cant stand the taste. If the pill even slightly touches any area of my mouth, it makes me want to vomit and leaves a horrible taste in my mouth. Ive tried drinking tons of water with it and mixing it with food but nothing has helped until.......

The other day, I stuffed the pill inside a fruit snack, totally wrapped it up inside the fruit snack. Then I just swallowed the whole thing. Now, Ive been wondering, would doing that have any effect on how the med works or gets into my system?

Anybody else have any issues with horrible tasting meds & if so, what do you do?

Hello Flutter!

I totally feel your pain on this one. -_-

Prednisone does indeed taste AWFUL. What I do is fill my mouth with water before I take the pill. I also tilt my head all the way back and then drop the pill in and QUICKLY swallow. Otherwise I taste it x( Its worse if you accidentally bite on one. *cringe* I usually brush my teeth as soon as I take my meds. That helps sometimes. Sadly, you eventually become a pro at swallowing pills when you have lupus. :/

I wish you the best of health!

I have become such a pro at taking my pills at night I take about 14 different pills, some quite large all in one bite and one sip of water. If I have to do it in 14 sips I would throw up. I have become so good at it. I just have to make sure I eat a cracker before and have a cracker ready for after just in case and have plenty of water ready but usually it is not a problem anymore. I take 20mg of prednisone every night. Ugh. I hate that stuff I hope I get off it soon, it’s been a month and my face is a balloon because of it. You sure do get use to taking pills

Flutter, since prednisone is an uncoated capsule, it is very bitter tasting ot me. YUCK! What I do that helps is a nice spoonful of raw honey after, or pop in a good throat drop like ricola, it kills the taste. If you can tolerate dairy, a small chunk of cheese eaten just after will "cleanse" your palate, like they do at wine tastings.

Be careful with long term prednisone use. Ask your pharmacists or doctor what it can do, but if over used, many patients with inflammatory diseases end up with osteoporosis. But when used once in a while, if it helps, we will be fine. Just came off a short course for my lower back. Glad to be through.

I completely know where you are coming from! I have choked on the pill a couple of times and it takes forever for the taste to go away.. When I got IV steroids I thought the taste wouldnt be there.... I was wrong it was worse than taking the pill.It slowly creeped up on me and stayed all day! I found that Ice Cream or chocolate milk to really help take the taste away. Regular milk helps but I would have to drink more than the chocolate. When I was on my 60 mg of pred. I went through a gallon of milk in less than 3 days. I also find eating a piece of chocolate helps clear that nasty taste.

Hope this helps! :)
