Prednisone, - how much & how long is too much for too long?

Hi all, I need to gain some insight into Prednisone use & dose.

How much is too much & for too long?

I have been on 50mg for some months now & am very concerned with regard to possible side effects. I seem to be coping O.K. at present (50 mg Prednisone & 50 mg Imuran following 10 days Hospital with 80% body lesions & urticaria I was a mess).

BUT I am worried about damage I can't see ( Liver, Kidneys, Bone density etc). I believe I will have to slowly taper down from 50mg & I assume that also will take some time. Essentially I believe my Dermatologist & my General Practitioner to be on the ball & I have faith in their medical judgements. However; -

Ten years ago my Mother was on Prednisone for two years (Giant Cell Arteritis), saved her sight (fantastic) though now on Dialysis X 3 weekly, following the development of diabetes & subsequent kidney failure. It seemed a fair trade for someone in their 70 & now 80's but I'm 53 & a bit frightened by the possibility of developing such profound side effects in my 50 & 60's.

Any insights will be gratefully received. Thank-you for your time Kaz

PS my face has cleared 95%, arms, legs, chest & back are flat, not lumpy, pink, not purple & now all lesions are fading. Scalp ears & nose are clear. Hair thinning but not falling out in clumps. My skin is very waxy (despite moisturisers). Palms of hands & finger pads are now 90% functional. So I guess something is working ehh? I just don't want to regret not being more informed & in a few years time paying the price for inertia on this issue. I want/need to be at least semi-literate when I raise this with the specialist.

Ciao for now Kaz

posted a pix of my leg just prior to all hell breaking loose with my skin.

I was once on 60mg for 18 months- necessary at that time- your disease activity dictates the dose and when life threatening your choice is death or side effects. Your doctors will do their best to manage the side effects of the drugs but sometimes it is your only choice.

Taa much Poobie for your thoughts, I will bear them in mind. It seems some days,- its all a trade off ehh?
