Has anyone ever had weightloss for no reason because of Lupus?

I lose weight when I’m flaring. When my flare improves I begin gaining again. I’m like a yo-yo, not intentionally, though. Hope you get some relief from not feeling well.

Before I got diagnosed with Lupus I did lose a lot of wt. I've had Lupus for a while now & gained 100 #'s on Prednisone. Eating smaller meals spread out over the day might help. I can't eat red meat, it's inflammatory & I can't digest it. Following an anti inflammatory diet will help. When I have flares I feel tired & too sick to eat.

Hello Callie,

Weight loss like "DeAnne" mentioned comes with the territory of Lupus and i checked your profile and i see your not taking plaquenil as that causes weight loss also....plus it can be what meds your taking over the counter also.

Some gastro problems and Gall bladder problems can cause weight loss besides being in a flare.... it maybe worth getting checked just to make sure what's causing it plus it's the rate it's coming off your body besides.

Here's what causes weight loss and weight gain with Lupus. :)

Weight changes — Systemic lupus erythematosus can lead to both weight loss and weight gain. Unintentional weight loss is often due to:

  • Decreased appetite
  • The side effects of medications
  • Gastrointestinal disease

Weight gain is usually due to one of two factors:

  • Salt and water retention associated with kidney disease
  • Increased appetite associated with the use of glucocorticoids (steroids)

I wish I could say I've lost from Lupus, but I have been the opposite. I keep gaining and it's so hard to lose while being on Prednisone. I try my best to eat healthy but it's very hard when you have a big appetite due to medications. It's very frustrating!!!

If members weight go up and down it's also best to get a thyroid test done because even though meds can make we gain or loss weight...thyroid gland trouble can do the same as it's also another autoimmune Disease which accompanies Lupus in a large majority of suffers.

Super advice, Sikskiyousis.

Our bodies seem to be out of control most of the time, so any way that we can regain that control is a blessing.

Happy Health to All,

DeAnne

Weight loss !! Yeah for a couple of months I looked like scarecrow Ha!Ha! Everyone was asking me (of all people was I on street drugs? Funny right, but of course I had to tell my doctor ! Our bodies go through so much , we’re ally don’t know when the Lupus will come in and take over , now that is Really funny…Beverly L.

Hi Callie ,I have a hard time keeping my weight on,I don’t really ever feel like eating so I eat yogurt ,smoothies, fruit,Im not much of a meat eater, not because I’m vegetarian,Im just not a fan…Ice cream is my favorite food,so I try to have a cup at night before bed,it helps me from getting to skinny,I do like salad, but it’s hard to eat when you feel sick to your stomach from all the meds,I will never take steroids again, and I think that makes a lot of people gain weight with their lupus,And because I won’t take steroids when I’m super sick it takes longer for me to feel better, although the last 5 yrs have been hard,I refuse to let lupus define who I am…it’s nice to come on life with lupus and meet new people and I’ve learned so much from everyone here,so read as much as you can about it,take your vitamin D,it really helps me sleep better and Ann has written some really good information on this site about the benefits of D and lupus…take care Callie and eat some smoothies with fruit to stay well if you can’t eat a real meal…Celeste

Thanks Latina. lol but i'm right meds can alter our weight, autoimmune diseases can...before i was diagnosed with this lot..i was diagnosed with an underactive thyroid gland which had been dead for years and sometimes when it goes hypo i lose more weight and now i'm constantly thin can't put weight on when i should be carrying weight besides my meds adding wreight, the doctor's can't understand it.

This is me now at 9st all the time and you can see by my face...sorry got no recent body pic's

This was me before i knew i had Lupus at 11st...from the thyroid trouble.

God i dow half miss my hair :)

I lost so much weight months before my diagnosis. I finally started gaining back once I got on the prednisone and had been on my meds for a while.

Before I was dx. I had lost almost 30 pounds in about a 5 wk period. My doctor wasnt to happy with that and told me to go out and eat all the ice cream and whatever else I wanted. Even after being pounded with steroids and eating like a pig, my weight has stabilized I havent lost any more and I havent gained anymore.....
